I think the biggest problem in the world at the moment it comes down to an empathy deficit. We're not practiced at imagining what things are like for other people. That's where the humanities come in. Because humanities graduates are traditionally good at that sort of critical thinking, good at making that sort of imaginative leap.

On a day like this to mark the extraordinary hard work, the endless essay crisis, the massive numbers of cups of coffee. Take a moment to realize how powerful that room is and how educated, how clever in extraordinary and difficult ways, how so few people will understand the subject of your PHD perhaps.

But how important it is for that to exist because it's new knowledge, new work. That's a a massive thing, a massive step forward, massive battle against the forces of ignorance. I love that. It's lovely to be here.

Personally, it's a huge pleasure and honor of course. My 10-year-old asked me, “are you getting this for your acting”, and I said: no, I don't think I am really. I think I'm getting it for shouting a bit and getting cross.

I've been a very vociferous advocator for proper Arts funding since...well, since I began to think really. One of my favorite games when people survived lockdown was to imagine surviving it without any artistic products whatsoever. No music, no comedy, no films, no games, video or otherwise. Because they get designed.

Try and do it without those and then see how sane you are at the end of six months. And then say you're not into the humanities. I probably grew up at the point where Britain was best funded in terms of affordable access to the Arts, and we are cashing that check 45 years later.

But we're also simultaneously squeezing that pipe of talent and opportunity. dry by removing that funding and removing that opportunity I I don't like that. So I don't shut up about it. We need to keep those opportunities as open and as available, as possible.

If you think that your talent might lie in the Arts of the humanities, don't take the first well-suited hand that offers you cash. Because the sort of things you've learned to do here, and the sort of subjects you may be studying, and the sort of areas of expertise you may be going into are not necessarily the best paid, but they are some of the most important and we can't afford to lose you. That's what I would say.
若你认为自己的天赋可能在于人文学科领域,切莫轻易接受第一个向你抛出橄榄枝的合适人选。因为你在此习得的专业技能、所研习的学科方向以及未来可能深耕的领域,虽未必属于高薪岗位,却至关重要——我们绝不能失去这样的人才。这正是我的建议。
