Why do you think it’s important to share the story of Antarctica?
It's an important story, but also one that's relatively unknown, and the excitement of discovering these incredible images on a huge screen, what the scientists have been researching for a long time now is paramount, as is our understanding of how fragile that system is and how we have to protect it and the wildlife.
Unlike any other continent, nearly all the life you see here has one thing in common. It is sustained by the sea.
There's an urgent message behind the wonder and awe of these extraordinary images and stories and it's that what happens there will affect all of us and we all need to play a part in solving the problem. No one owns Antarctica. It's governed by a multinational treaty. So it's going to take global cooperation to protect it.
So this is a story about a beautiful place that in itself is worth saving but also its value and its worth which is interrelated to all of us and all of our stories and all of our futures.
How do you think the film will look on a Giant Screen?
I think that the film is going to look extraordinary and I think it delivers entertainment and drama but also a very important message about how we need to conserve Antarctica.
You have young kids...What do you hope that younger people and families will take away from the film?
I hope they enjoy it. First of all, it's it's incredibly entertaining and dramatic and gripping. There's so much riveting footage and never before, certainly in my experience seen evidence of life in these impossible circumstances.
The most severe cold on Earth, the windiest place on Earth, and yet incredible creatures survive both in the sea and on the land. It's amazingly informative. And I think the big takeaway for me would be no matter how remote any part of the world may feel, it's all a lot closer than they think.
What were your most memorable parts from the film?
I love the brinicle. I like that. That's just like some crazy special effect. And the time-lapse footage is just extraordinary.
When it's extremely cold, the salt in the sea ice forms a super cooled liquid called brinicle that sinks, freezing the water around it.
I think the moment that really stood out for me, though, is the whales harvesting krill, which is their main source of food, by using air bubbles in a near perfect spiral. It looks like some sort of abstract painting that you can't quite make sense of. And then suddenly, in amongst these patterns of bubbles, you have this huge mouth opening up.
The whales spiral inwards to corral the krill into a tight mass. And as they gulp, they squeeze out the water and feast.
To learn that each one of those whales, because of the ecosystem they're part of, soak up carbon like our trees do. Every year, this ocean and all the life within it removes as much carbon from our atmosphere as two Amazon rainforests. Another extraordinary fact is that Antarctica holds 90% of the world's ice. I didn't know it was that much. 90% is down south. That blew my mind.
Any my favourite animals that stood out?
The seal pup making it.
This storm has raged for 3 days now and she's still protecting her pup. But these conditions are so tough that she needs to seek shelter in the water.
I think any parent out there is going to find that a tough thing to watch, but he makes it. It's okay.
