Michelle Yeoh recently made history by becoming the first Asian woman to win ‘Best Actress’ at the Academy Awards. She won the prestigious award for her role in the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once.

However, before Yeoh landed the role, she was not a major player in Hollywood. In fact, many critics have incorrectly labelled her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once as her breakthrough, despite beginning her acting career in the 1980s.

Michelle Yeoh was born on August 6th, 1962, in Malaysia. Growing up, the actor, whose birth name is Yeoh Choo Kheng. Despite her success as an Academy Award-winning actor, she aspired to become a dancer from a young age. Following many years of ballet training, she enrolled in London’s Royal Academy of Dance when she moved to the United Kingdom as a teenager.

Following her undergraduate degree, and a spinal injury that prevented her from pursuing ballet professionally, Yeoh began competing in beauty pageants, earning the title of Miss Malaysia World. Her success in beauty pageants worldwide led her to secure a role in a commercial alongside Jackie Chan, kickstarting her on-screen career.

She appeared in many Hong Kong martial arts films and action flicks, performing most of the stunts by herself, even though she had never been formally trained to do so.

Yeoh transitioned into Hollywood with a role in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. She accepted, and her performance in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon became another standout moment in her career. At the time, Lee’s film was the highest-grossing foreign-language movie in the United States.

In recent years, Yeoh’s notable credits include Star Trek, Crazy Rich Asians, and Shang-Chi. However, Everything Everywhere All At Once delivered Yeoh’s major breakthrough into mainstream success.

40 years. Not letting go of this. So just quickly, thank you Hollywood Foreign Press for giving me this honor. It's been an amazing journey, and an incredible fight to be here today, but I think it's been worth it.

I remember when I first came to Hollywood; it was a dream come true until I got here, because look at this face. I came here and was told, “you're a minority,” and I'm like, “no, that's not possible.” And then someone said to me, “You speak English!” I mean, forget about them not knowing Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Asia, India. And then I said, “Yeah the flight here was about 13 hours long so I learned.”
我记得第一次来好莱坞的时候，我以为梦想成真了，可真到了才发现我想多了。看看我这张亚洲脸就知道了。我来这之后，被告知我是少数群体，我心想，不会吧。还有人问我，你会说英语呀？暂且不说他们可能分不清韩国、日本、马来西亚、亚洲、印度……我说，对啊，我过来得飞13个小时，我在飞机上学会的。

As time went by... I turned 60 last year, and I think all of you women understand this, as the days, the years, and the numbers get bigger, it seems like opportunities start to get smaller as well. And it was probably at a time when I thought, “Well, come on girl, you've had a really, really good run. You worked with some of the best people: Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, and Danny Boyle, so it's good. It's all good.” Then along came the best gift: Everything Everywhere All at Once.

坚持源于热爱，但更多的是要耐得住寂寞，不计成本地付出，不在意结果，享受其中的过程。在无人问津的日子里，保持耐心；在起起伏伏的过程中，保持冷静。也许正如那句话：“但行好事，莫问前程”，也如那句话：“Good things come to those who wait.”
