歌曲故事背景梗概：

Smile原来的出处是卓别林的早期无声电影《摩登时代》，故事发生在美国20世纪30年代经济萧条时期，卓别林饰演的工人查理在工厂干活到之后平发疯直到最终进入精神病院，这一切都是与当时的经济危机给人们带来的生存危机有着非常密切的联系。

而在艰难的生活中，查理和孤女相濡以沫，场面温馨感人同时也是焕发着人性的光辉。尽管查理一生遭遇坎坷，但却始终乐观而坚强。歌中阐述了一个非常浅显但也非常深刻的道理：面对不幸，微笑最为可贵。
