这首歌就是Gotye从自己过去的一些真实感情经历中总结出来的。其中很大一部分歌词是对自己恋爱经历的反思，以及带来的一些后果，包括双方当时的想法和后来的一些感悟，当然这种情感是相当的错综复杂。

Gotye与他的女友有一段时间内彼此互相伤害，这让Gotye觉得继续这样下去倒不如分手，结束这一段错误的恋情。后来Gotye便写下名为《Somebody That I Used to Know》的歌曲，并将其作为分手歌曲送给他的女友，希望在未来的时间里，自己和女友都能够重新审视自我，做更好的自己。
