I'd heard Zima announce the unveiling of his final work of art.

这么多年来 我请求过很多次采访 但都被拒绝了
Over the years, I'd asked many times for interviews and was always rejected.

现在 不知出于何种原因
Now, for whatever reason,

齐马·蓝竟然主动提出要和我见面
Zima Blue had requested to speak with me.

我无法分辨 这种蓝到底更接近天空还是海洋
I couldn't decide whether the blue was a closer match to the sky or to the sea.

其实 两个都不接近
Neither, really.

齐马蓝 是一种精确的颜色
Zima Blue, it was a precise thing.

人们对齐马的过去了解甚少
Little is known about Zima's history.

据说他是从肖像画开始他的艺术生涯的
It was said that he started his art career in portraiture,

但对于齐马来说 人类的轮廓实在太过于渺小
but for Zima, the human form was too small a subject.

对更深层意义的寻求使他的目光越来越长远...
The search for deeper meaning caused him to look further...

最终直抵宇宙本身
to the cosmos itself.

所以他开始创作壁画
That's how the mural work started.

不可否认 它们乃绝佳之作
They were undeniably brilliant.

有一天 齐马公开了一幅有点与众不同的壁画
One day, Zima unveiled a mural that had something different about it.

在画布中央 有一个蓝色的小矩形
In the middle of the canvas was a tiny blue square.

那个矩形只是开始
The square was just the beginning.

接下来的几十年
Over the next several decades,

画中的抽象形状变了又变 而且面积越来越大
the abstract shapes changed and became more dominant.

但用的一直都是同一种蓝色
But, always, the shade of blue was the same.

就是齐马蓝
It was Zima Blue.

很久很久之前 齐马公开了他第一幅全蓝壁画
Before very long, Zima unveiled the first of his entirely blue murals.

人们都以为这是齐马最大的本事了
It was considered by many to be as far as Zima could take things.

但他们都错了
They couldn't have been more wrong.

当大多数人谈及他的蓝色时代时
When most people speak about his Blue Period,

他们说的是他创作巨大壁画的时期...
they mean the era of the truly huge murals...

but Zima was just getting started.

It was a certain level of spectacle that made Zima truly famous,

even to those with no interest in art.

But fame was never the point.

In spite of all his success, Zima was still dissatisfied

而他接下来做的事情 对于很多人来说 是一种对艺术的极致献身
and what he did next was, for many, too extreme a sacrifice to make for art.

He was a handsome man, even after all his transformations.

有一个星球叫做哈尔科夫八号
There was a planet called Kharkov Eight.

专门从事非法的神经机械改装
It specialized in illicit cybernetic modifications.

他进行了彻底的生物学手术
He underwent radical biological procedures

使得自己可以不用穿保护服
that enabled him to tolerate extreme environments

就能忍受极端环境
without the burden of a protective suit.

他的眼睛可以看透任何已知光谱
His eyes could see in any known spectrum.

他不再呼吸氧气
He no longer breathed oxygen.

他的皮肤被加压聚合物替代
His skin was replaced with pressurized polymer

所以他冒险探索 与宇宙交谈
and so he ventured forth to commune with the cosmos.

但齐马最终意识到
But what Zima eventually realized

宇宙已经在讲述自己的真理
is that the cosmos was already speaking its own truth

而且远比他展示的深刻
far better than he ever could.

我对真理的追求使我到达此处
My search for truth has led me here,

这也是我最终的归宿
to what will be my final piece.

最后 我通过艺术理解了我所寻求的东西
At last, I understand the thing I sought through my art.

这个游泳池和你说的有什么关系吗
And what does this swimming pool have to do with that?

这不是个普通的泳池
It's not just any swimming pool.

很久以前 它属于一位有天赋的年轻女性
Long ago, it belonged to a talented young woman

她对实用机器人尤为感兴趣
with a keen interest in practical robotics.

她创造了许多机器人来帮她干家里的杂活儿
She created dozens of robots to do odd jobs around her house,

但她最喜欢那个专门清理泳池的机器人
but she was especially fond of the one she'd created to clean her swimming pool.

那个小机器人不停歇地擦洗着泳池的瓷砖内壁
The little machine toiled endlessly, scrubbing the ceramic sides of the pool.

但女人并不满足于它的工作能力
But the young woman wasn't satisfied with the job it did.

所以她给它装载了整套色彩视觉系统
So she gave it a full color vision system

和足够聪明的大脑 使它能用周遭环境的模型
and a brain large enough to process the visual data

来处理视觉信息
into a model of its surroundings.

她赋予了它做决定的能力
She gave it the ability to make its own decisions,

让它可以自己设计清理泳池的不同策略
to design different strategies for cleaning the pool.

女人继续将这个机器人用作新硬件和软件的测试载体
She continued to use the machine as a test-bed for new hardware and software.

经过数代的更新升级 它变得能加智能
And by stages, it became more aware.

最后 女人去世了
Eventually, the woman died.

那个小机器人经手了
The little machine was passed

一代又一代主人
from one owner to the next.

他们对它进行不断的改造
They added things, made modifications here and there

历经更迭 它变得愈加有生命力
and with every iteration, it became more alive.

变得更加...
Became more...

像我
me.

这就是当初那个泳池
This is that same pool.

我让人将它挖出 移到了这里
I had it dug up. Moved here.

但你是个有器械部件的人类 而不是自认为是人类的机器
But you're a man with machine parts, not a machine that thinks it's a man.

有时候 我也难以理解自己现在的身份
Sometimes, it's difficult even for me to understand what I've become.

更难记得自己曾经是什么
And harder still to remember what I once was.

这些瓷砖的蓝色...
The blue of the tiles...

是齐马蓝 制造商给起的名字
Zima Blue, the manufacturer called it.

我生来第一眼见到的就是它
The first thing I ever saw.

这也是我生命开始之处
This was where I began.

一个仅仅可以控制自己行动的简陋小机器
A crude little machine with barely enough intelligence to steer itself.

但这就是我的整个世界
But it was my world.

是我所知道的一切 是我需要知道的一切
It was all I knew, all I needed to know.

那现在呢
And now?

我将浸没于此
I will immerse myself.

并缓慢地关闭自己高级的大脑功能...
And as I do, I will slowly shut down my higher brain functions...

自我分解...
un-making myself...

只留下能识辨环境的部分...
leaving just enough to appreciate my surroundings...

来获取顺利执行任务的简单快乐
to extract some simple pleasure from the execution of a task well done.

我对真理的寻求终于结束了
My search for truth is finished at last.

我要回家了
I'm going home.
