I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain—and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.

I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
One luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.

Robert Frost

1.Robert Frost
- 20th century American poet
- awarded the Pulitzer Prize four times
- famous for his pastoral poems (Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Night, The Road not Taken)
- Suffered from serious depression

2. Modernism in Frost
Frost uses traditional forms of poetry but idiomatic language to represent ordinary, every day life.
Unlike his contemporaries, Frost believes that "the self-imposed restrictions of meter in form" can be help for because writers can focus more on the content rather than struggling to invent new forms.

3. Theme
- Depression
The narrator is describing his feelings when he’s suffering from depression. "The night" is the depression itself. He feels completely isolated and lonely.

- Loneliness, solitude, homelessness of modern man
“An interrupted cry.. But not to call me back or say good-bye;” suggests homelessness and isolation of the narrator in a modern city.
“An unearthly height, one luminary clock against the sky proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.” portraits the clock as a lofty, unreachable object. Time, represented by the clock, is indifferent.
