other boys just to make you jealous, and
you were?
I thought you'd drop me...
But you didn't.

There were plenty of things you did to put up with me,
to keep me happy, to love me, and there are
so many things I wanted to tell
you when you returned from
Vietnam...
But you didn't.

This poem is written by Merrill Glass in memory of her husband who passed away in Vietnam War.

The first three stanzas seem to present this poem as a romantic poem. Glass invites her husband to think about romantic moments they spent together. They all start with ‘remember...’, and end with ‘but you didn’t’. But it was not until the last stanza that the true purpose of the poem is revealed. Glass lists all the things she wants to tell to her husband, but she won’t have any chance now.
