介绍: John Donne
No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's

介绍: John Donne
No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

没有谁是一座孤岛
约翰•多恩

没有谁是一座孤岛,
在大海里独踞;

1.John Donne (1572-1631).
From “Devotions upon Emergent Occasions”
John Donne is a pre-eminent representative of the metaphysical poets, a loose group of 17th-century English poets whose work was characterized by the inventive use of conceits.

2.Conceit: a simile or a metaphor that seems to be dissimilar, but in fact quite fanciful. It usually sets up an analogy between spiritual qualities and an object in the physical world.

3.Man is only a component of a larger mass. The loss of one individual diminishes the collective size of the mass. Europe is an island drifting on the sea, which cannot survive without being connected to other continents.
