You may find however hard you try to record before a mic., there are always noises in your work. That’s because you are not working in a professional studio and all kinds of noises drive you crazy. You may not notice them but your mic. can hear everything. They are from everywhere: inside and outside your room. The noises from inside are caused by computer fans, equipment, body noises and the surroundings from outside.
Now you know where the noises are from, you need to know how to kill them. If your computer makes a huge noise, probably the inside fans are the problem, so try to find new fans to replace the old ones, or simply use a laptop computer. If the noise is from other equipment, try to find it and shut it then. Body noises are caused by many things like body movement, touching things and especially the mouth noise when speaking. To avoid the mouth noise, you have to get your throat hydrated by drinking a little water many times in the day, instead of drinking much only once, why? a dry voice usually sounds tired and noisy. A lazy mouth is always a bad idea, because when you are not trained or warming up enough, your throat won’t work as expected; A dirty mouth: when there are little things or food in your mouth, you may not notice, but they do cause noises, and you can brush your teeth or get a chewing gum to refresh your mouth before you record; other physical reasons: never record when you are sick or uncomfortable, because your work should get the best of you.

Hardwares do matter if you try to set up a professional home studio, and the cost might be as high as thousands of RMB. But if you are a beginner at home and just want to feel what it’s like to do voice-over, what you need is nothing but a quiet computer with a soundcard, a mic., or maybe just a cell phone for liulishuo here. Wherever you are, it’s necessary to use softwares to process your work and reduce noise. Popular softwares including Adobe Audition and Goldwave can record, reduce noise, change the volume and more.
