What I understood from my own research and from talking to archaeologists, historians, experts - there were, in fact, people who survived Pompeii. And that was the light bulb for me. That's why I wanted to make this series.
When I was a child, I fell in love with the ancient world. It was the myths, the legends, the tragedies, the philosophy that captured my imagination. And that's always been my fascination with Pompeii.
I've been to Pompeii twice. The first time was when I was seventeen in 1998. I was studying Latin and Greek. It was beyond any expectations I had.
When you visit Pompeii and Herculaneum, you feel this extraordinary resonance. It's very moving because thousands and thousands of people were completely frozen in time.
And I can’t stress enough how unusual that is. That we, as human beings from the present day, can physically visit a place from the past and witness our ancestors. And it’s impossible not to be affected by that.
This is a story about Pompeii that you have never seen before. It’s not a documentary. It’s not a drama. It's a new way of telling a story. It’s visceral. It’s informative. It’s experiential.
We bring the past into the present, and we take the present back to the past. And there is new archaeological research with cutting-edge technology. Databases of these inscriptions and names and sources.
We experience the events of that day by living in the shoes of the real Romans who were there. I understand their choices. I witness their actions. I feel their pain. I feel their loss. And in so doing, I become almost a ‘time detective.’
Human beings really haven’t changed that much in two thousand years. Our need to connect with each other. Our need for purpose and meaning. By examining who they were, we might get close to understanding who we are.
I’m so grateful to National Geographic for giving me the opportunity to tell this story. And I’ll never think about Pompeii in the same way ever again.
