What I understood from my own research and from talking to archaeologists, historians, experts - there were, in fact, people who survived Pompeii. And that was the light bulb for me. That's why I wanted to make this series.

When you visit Pompeii and Herculaneum, you feel this extraordinary resonance. It's very moving because thousands and thousands of people were completely frozen in time.
