Ah, yeah, I was hoping I’d find some Tarkovsky work—and here’s Stalker. I think Stalker was my introduction to Andrei Tarkovsky; it’s the film that opened my eyes to stillness in cinema. And of course, there’s Andrei Rublev, a real favourite of mine. I haven’t watched it in years, so I’m thrilled to have found it here.

This one holds a very special place in my heart: Purple Noon, or Plein Soleil. It’s the very first screen adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley. Anthony Minghella recommended it to me. Much like the current Ripley series out now, it shows how this unforgettable character from the novel can be interpreted in countless different ways—it’s vastly different from the version of The Talented Mr. Ripley that Minghella and I made together.

For one thing, they cast Alain Delon as Ripley, and they stay faithful to the book by making him a painter. In our film, we changed his profession to a musician. It’s full of twists and turns; the sea shares that same striking shade of blue as our adaptation, yet its tone isn’t quite as dark as the current TV series Ripley. It’s an extraordinary film.

Another filmmaker introduced me to this one—he wanted me to watch it as inspiration for a movie we collaborated on: The Wages of Fear.

Now, if I’m being completely honest, I struggle to remember directors’ names, even though this is a Clouzot film. I’ll probably teach you that much today. Names slip my mind easily, but I never forget the feeling a movie gives me. This film follows men trapped in utterly desperate circumstances, willing to do anything for money, anything to survive. They embark on the darkest, most dangerous journey imaginable, and it’s absolutely brilliant, deeply moving. Shamefully, I don’t recognise most of the other films lining these shelves, but this one is unmissable.

Oh, this is such an interesting film. I first watched it back in the 1980s; my mum showed me Local Hero. That was a fascinating era for British cinema. Local Hero and My Beautiful Laundrette are two films I clearly remember from that time. Back then, most movies depicted worlds that felt alien and distant, nothing like my own life—but these two felt incredibly close to home. Local Hero is set in Scotland, yet it captures a version of Britain I recognised instantly.

My Beautiful Laundrette was similar in that regard; it portrayed a London I knew well, and it’s incredibly touching. Burt Lancaster delivers an incredible performance in the final act, appearing almost like a knight in shining armour. It’s a wonderful picture.

This film is the one that introduced me to Bob Hoskins—and I was lucky enough to work with him later on. It’s Neil Jordan’s Mona Lisa. Again, I saw this at a really formative age, and it showed a raw side of London I’d seen all around me but had never seen captured on screen before.

Michael Caine has a fantastic supporting role; unsurprisingly, he steals every scene he appears in, yet this is undeniably Bob’s film through and through.

Alright, one last one—arguably one of my all-time favourite films. My children always tease me for never picking favourites. I always say I love all kinds of films and all genres of music, but this movie has stayed with me ever since my mum showed it to me when I was only twelve or thirteen years old: The Night of the Hunter.

It’s a dark fable, a terrifying cinematic nursery rhyme. From roughly the halfway point onward, it fully slips into a child’s surreal fantasy, filled with extreme close-up shots of lizards and spiders. Robert Mitchum delivers one of the most phenomenal performances ever committed to film.
