Police in Kenosha, Wisconsin fired tear gas at protesters who defied a curfew, threw bottles and shot fireworks. It was the second straight night of protests after video showed a police officer shooting a black man, apparently in the back, wounding him.

India reported more than 60,000 coronavirus infections in a 24-hour period. The virus has affected well over three million people in India, but more than three quarters of those patients have been discharged from hospitals.

Tropical Storm Laura is now expected to become a major hurricane. Laura is forecast to make a landfall Wednesday night or Thursday near the Texas-Louisiana border.
