“Wait—” said Jack, panting. “I think we got away.”
“等等——”杰克喘着粗气说道，“我想我们已经逃脱了。”

Jack and Annie stopped running and caught their breath.
杰克和安妮停下来都大口喘着气。

“Where are we?” said Jack.
“我们现在在哪儿呢?”杰克说。

“Where’s the monkey?” said Annie, looking back at the forest. “Do you think the jaguar caught him?”
“那猴子呢?”安妮边说边回头看着森林，“你觉得那只美洲豹抓住它了吗?”

“No, monkeys are fast,”said Jack.
“不会的，猴子跑得很快。”杰克说。

Of course, jaguars are fast, too, Jack thought. But he didn’t want to tell Annie that.
当然啦，美洲豹跑得也很快…… 杰克想，可是他不想把这个告诉安妮。

“I hope he’s okay,” said Annie.
“希望它没事。”安妮说。

Squeak. Peanut peeked out of Annie’s pocket.
吱吱。吱吱。花生把脑袋从安妮口袋里伸出来四处瞄着。

“Peanut! I almost forgot you!” said Annie. “Are you okay?”
“花生!我差点把你给忘了!”安妮说，“你还好吧?”

The mouse just stared at Annie with her big eyes.
那只小老鼠用她的大眼睛盯着安妮。

“She looks scared,” said Jack. “Poor Peanut.”
“她看起来好像受到惊吓了。”杰克说，“可怜的花生。”

“Poor monkey,” said Annie. She looked around at the forest.
“可怜的猴子。”安妮说，四下不停地看着。

“We’d better check the book,” Jack said.
“我们最好再看看书。”杰克说。

He pulled out the book. He turned the pages, searching for help.
他抽出书不停地翻着，在里面寻找帮助。

He stopped at a picture of a scary creature.
他在一张可怕的生物图片面前停了下来。

“Oh, man. What’s this?” he said.
“噢，我的老天，这是什么啊?”他说。

Jack read the writing below the picture. It said：
杰克读到底下写的一段文字，上面写着：

Vampire bats live in the Amazon rain forest. At night, they quietly bite their victims and suck their blood.
吸血蝙蝠生活在亚马孙热带雨林中。每到晚上，吸血蝙蝠会悄无声息地叮咬它们的目标然后吸食血液。

“Vampire bats?” said Jack. He felt faint.
“吸血蝙蝠?”杰克说，他脑袋一晕。

“Vampire bats?” said Annie.
“吸血蝙蝠?”安妮说。

Jack nodded. “After dark.”
杰克点点头说，“等天黑了它们就出来了。”

Annie and Jack looked around. The rain forest seemed to be getting even darker.
安妮和杰克环顾四周，雨林现在看起来越发黑了。

“Yikes, ” said Annie. She looked at Jack. “Maybe we should go home.”
“我的妈呀!”安妮看着杰克说，“也许我们该回家了。”

Jack nodded. For once he agreed with her.
杰克点了点头，这是他第一次同意安妮的意见。

“But what about our mission?” said Annie. “What about Morgan?”
“可是我们的任务怎么办?”安妮说，“摩根怎么办?”

“We’ll come back, ” said Jack. “We’ll have to be prepared.”
“我们会回来的。”杰克说，“我们必须有所准备。”

“So we’ll come back tomorrow?” Annie asked.
“那我们明天再来?”安妮问道。

“Right. Now which way is the tree house?” said Jack.
“没错!哪条是回树屋的路?”杰克说。

“This way, ” said Annie, pointing.
“这边儿。”安妮指着一边说。

“That way,” said Jack, pointing in the opposite direction.
“那边儿。”杰克指着另一边。

They looked at each other. “We’re lost,” they said together.
他们看着对方，“我们迷路了!”他们同时说。

Squeak.
吱吱。吱吱。

“Don’t worry, Peanut.” Annie started to pat the mouse again. But then she stopped.
“别担心，花生。”安妮又开始拍小老鼠的脑袋了，可是然后就停住了。

Squeak. Squeak. Squeak.
吱吱。吱吱。吱吱。

“Jack, I think Peanut wants to help us,” said Annie.
“杰克，我想花生是要帮助我们。”安妮说。

“How?”
“怎么帮?”

“The way she helped us in the time of ninjas—”
“就像上次在日本她帮助我们一样!”

Annie placed the mouse on the leafy forest floor. “Take us to the tree house, Peanut.”
安妮把小老鼠放到了满是落叶的地上说，“带我们去树屋，花生!”

The mouse took off.
小老鼠出发了。

“Where’d she go?” said Annie. “I don’t see her!”
“她去哪儿了?”安妮说，“我看不到她。”

“There!” said Jack. He pointed to leaves rustling on the ground.
“那儿!”杰克指着地上一些跳动的树叶说。

A streak of white passed over the leaves.
一条白色的线在叶子上面跑过。

“Yes, there!” said Annie.
“对，就在那儿!”安妮说。

Jack and Annie followed the moving leaves. The streak of white appeared. And disappeared.
杰克和安妮跟着那些颤动的叶子，那白色出现又消失了。

Suddenly Jack stopped. The forest floor was still. There was no sign of Peanut.
突然杰克停了下来，地上安静下来了，没有花生的痕迹。

“Where is she?” asked Jack. He kept staring at the ground.
“她在哪儿?”杰克问道，他不停地看着地面。

“Jack!”
“杰克!”

Jack glanced around. Annie was standing on the other side of a nearby tree. She was pointing up.
杰克回头一瞥，安妮正站在附近一棵树的另一边，指着上面。

Jack looked up. The tree house.
杰克向上一看，树屋!

“Oh, whew,” Jack said softly.
“喔，真棒!”杰克轻声说。

“She saved us again,” said Annie. “She’s running up the ladder. All by herself. Look.” Annie pointed at the rope ladder.

“她又救了我们一次。”安妮说，“她已经跑上梯子了，她自己爬上去的，你看呀。”安妮指着绳梯。
Peanut was climbing up one of the ropes.
花生正顺着绳梯的一边往上爬呢。

“Let’s go,” Jack said.
“走吧!”杰克说。

Annie started up the ladder. Then Jack.
安妮开始往上爬，杰克跟在她的后面。

They followed Peanut all the way up to the canopy of the rain forest.
他们跟着花生一路爬到了雨林的树冠层上面。
