Hey guys this is Frank X with Real story. There’s always a topic I wanted to talk about with you but felt rather hesitant: gay people. Because I know this might be sensitive to some people. And to be honest with you, I don’t hate gay people and I think each person is different and I respect anyone who’s honest and true to themselves in life. There are simply many different people in this world and we can’t expect them all to be the same with us. So here we go.
The streets around the Stonewall Inn are quiet now. But it was a violent picture in June of 1969. It was called Stonewall uprising.Stonewall Inn was a popular gay bar in New York city. Violence happened when a police raid triggered widespread outrage and an uprising, which caused several days of riots and demonstrations. Many people believe it was the start of the modern gay rights movement. It showed how much people wanted to make a change, whether that’s fighting for the right to work and serve, or parading in the streets and celebrating who you really are, or that’s winning the right to marry. Before this incident, being gay was thought to be a kind of disease.Jim Obergefell was one of those people. He fought for marriage equality in the state of Ohio for him and his longtime partner John Arthur who had been diagnosed with a bad disease. They were not able to get married in Ohio.
They chartered a medical jet and flew to Baltimore and got married inside that airplane. Then John died days later. The state of Ohio would ignore their legal marriage and said John was unmarried and refused to list him and John as his surviving spouse.Jim and other friends decided to file a suit against the state of Ohio and that ended up going all the way to the Supreme Court and they won. On June 26, 2015 marriage equality became the law of the land. Jim lent his personal objects to a museum in Washington DC to show his story including the couple’s wedding rings, the jacket he was wearing when he got married and the bow tie he wore when the Supreme court decision was announced. The museum now exhibits that part of history and the people who fought for their rights. There’s a display case for Harvey Milk, a leading human rights activist and one of the country’s first openly gay elected officials killed after only a year in office. Another man from congressman Barney Frank who announced he was gay in 1987 after having served for three terms. And a red dress from Tammy Baldwin who in 1998 became the first openly gay woman to be elected to the US.Congress. While there has been great progress made in the gay rights movement over the past 50 years, many say that there’s still much work to be done.
The term “homosexuality” appears now in all kinds of media and daily conversations in China, and many gay people are not afraid to reveal their special identity. In many cities there are even public platforms built for gay people. A survey shows 30 to 35 percent of gay people had a strong sense of killing themselves because of discrimination from others.
How to describe gay people and their identity? In the early 1990s, the word “out” came to be used as a verb. ‘To out someone’ meant to tell the world that the person was homosexual, usually a famous person. It was short for “coming out of the closet; out of your cupboard, or out of your house”. It then developed. People who do the outing who tell the world about the people are “outers”. And then people have been “outed”. Many people don’t want to tell others they are gay, so they don’t come out of their closet. “Coming out” is now a positive term, referring to anyone who decides to tell others about who they are, men or women.
The next stories are about being seen for who you are. In the 1950s many LGBTQ kids in school were isolated and even now still are. Alexie was a Ukrainian immigrant who grew up in New York city. He was the only child raise by his single mom. He used to go to a park where many LGBTQ people met. One day he met an old man who was open about being gay and told him what’s like to be that open. He told Alexie he should feel good about who he really was.Later he realized he would never want to lie about being gay.(audio)
That’s Alexie telling his story. He was an activist of demonstrations for gay people’s rights in the 1960s.Next we hear from a trans-gender woman Dee Westnhauser. She grew up in Texas in the 1950s. Even though she knew she was a girl, she always felt she had to hide it, except for when she visited her aunt Yaya. She felt quite isolated and alone. She felt quite different when she was a little kid, and was misunderstood by everyone around her, except for one person.(audio)
That’s Dee who had to hide herself about being gay for a very long time. Last year, at the age of 61, Dee decided to come out. Then she has been living her life openly as a transgender woman. And Yaya’s wisdom inspired her so much that those lessons she learnt from Yaya still are being passed on by Dee today.Yaya died when Dee was 21.She still remembers Yaya told her you live whatever life passes to you and live it to the fullest.(music)
