Welcome to Real story. I’m Frank X. In the past shows I told stories about reunions and they touched many people’s hearts. I think it’s because this kind of stories reminds us of a sense of belonging, where we are from and deep down what we really want in life, something meaningful to fight for. In today’s show, I also want to share some stories about reunions, and this time it’s about father and son type.
The first story happened on March 2019 in Zhengzhou China. A Chinese father reconnected with his long lost son who was missing for 24 years. It was a criminal case of human trafficking. Thanks to the local police, Mr. Wu met his adult son again and he had never thought he would, as 24 years of his son’s missing sounds like a too long time for anyone. It’s such a touching moment for Mr. Wu and his son and even the police around them were moved. Back in 1994 Mr. Wu arrived in Zhengzhou with his mom and 3-year-old son Wu Feng. They rented a house and tried to sell vegetables for a living. On May 25th that year, Mr. Wu came back home to prepare lunch for his family from the market where he did business. He saw his son playing at the door of the house and when he finished cooking lunch and came out he found his son gone. He looked everywhere his son possibly stayed but still couldn’t find him. He called the police for help but unfortunately because of the limited information about his son at that time, the police couldn’t find his son either until this year. With the technology of tracking people based on the DNA searching, the police have cracked down many crimes and saved many trafficked children including Mr. Wu’s son. That’s how this reunion was possible. To help Mr. Wu, in November 2016 Zhengzhou police registered he and his wife’s DNA information and input it into the police search system. Good work pays off. This February a police officer found clues of Mr. Wu’s son, and was told this young man was adopted by his present family 24 years ago. Finally it was clear about what happened. His son was trafficked and sold to a stranger more than 20 years ago.

Since May 2016, the security bureau of China set up an internet platform-Emergency information of lost children. Through the platform, thousands of Chinese families have reunited with their lost children. Speaking of lost kids, the ones aged 2 to 4 are most easily trafficked because such children don’t have a sense of self-protection yet and many might stay a bit away from their parents’ sight. Besides those 13 to 14 year-old are also very possible to be trafficked as free labour or used as a tool of crimes. The places the trafficking happens are mostly public areas like train stations, schools and markets. Children trafficking mostly happens in the southwestern China. You might think these lost children are sent far away from their home, but actually up to 43% of the children are still kept in the local cities and about 16% stay inside the local province. Probably because the farther the criminals take children, the more risks they will take to be caught. In 2014, Fujian police cracked a case of children trafficking, and they sent a boy back to his parents after he was lost for 10 years. To the couple’s surprise their lost son had been living in the neighboring village for the whole time, which was only 4 kilometers away from them. Even though the police do their best to find the lost kids, the number of getting back the kids is not satisfactory. Many families are still waiting for their children to be home.
Back in the 1940s, there was another radio program called Reunions in America that reconnected people live on air. It’s the time after WWII.Today let’s revisit their very first radio show . It’s about a survivor of the Nazi German camps. He was reunited with his father in the show. (radio audio)…..Siegbert Freiberg had a happy family in Germany until 1938 everything changed. His parents were taken to different concentration camps and Siegbert escaped and moved to New York. And he had no idea what happened to them and never got to see them again. Before this story begins, I want to take you back to the golden age of radio shows in 1940s in America.Let’s listen to a part of one of the earliest radio shows “Reunion”. (radio audio) ….Now an NPR reporter found Siegbert and interviewed him 50 years later to get the rest of the story. Siegbert remembered he was arrested by the Nazzis on February 27th 1943, and was taken to a collection point, where he fell down the stairs and broke his leg.The rest of the people there were taken away to somewhere they could never return. Fortunately a stranger next to him called an ambulance and he was brought to Jewish Hospital in Berlin. When he stayed in hospital there, a social worker came to ask him about his family contact. He told him about a relative of his mother’s in the suburb of Berlin. A week later the relative came with a friend to visit him. Siegbert was 13 at that time. The friend was a warm-hearted lady full of care. She had tears in her eyes when she saw Siegbert. He got so much fear there and one day he decided to run away from the hospital. It was dark. Siegbert took his little suitcase and ran to the house of the pretty girl who visited him at the hospital. He told her he was in danger in the hospital and asked her if she could take care of him. Siegbert spent the entire time with this nice German family until the end of the war. He arrived in the United States on July 15th 1946. When he was in the US. an agency contacted him and told him his father was in Shanghai and if he would like to join a radio show. But he wasn’t told he would be reunited with his father. He was completely surprised when his father appeared at the side of the stage. The whole stage was full of touching tears. Because the show was so popular that they invited him and his father to come back the following week. His father gave him a steamboat ticket to revisit his German relatives including the girl’s family who took care of him.He fell in love with the German girl and asked her to marry him. Luckily she said yes, and now they have been happily married for 45 years…..(Audio 1)
That’s Siegbert’s voice and he was recalling his past experience. The above audio information was from a documentary recorded in 2002, the year when Siegbert died in America………
