Hey it’s Frank X with Real story. In today’s show I’ll share some stories about the medical staff at war with you. Lots of you might have seen the movie called Hacksaw Ridge three years ago. Hacksaw Ridge is a movie based on a true story. The real name of the hero in the story is Desmond Doss. The movie was about his experience in the WWII as a battle medical member. He saved 75 wounded soldiers in the battlefield without taking any weapons. For those who have no idea about what it’s like in a war: bullets are flying everywhere and people are exploded into pieces. It’s a horrifying picture even when we imagine it.Desmond was born in Virginia on January 7, 1919. He joined the US. army in April 1942. During his service, he was considered as weak by the other soldiers because he refused to take weapons to kill the enemy in the battle. He simply didn’t like the idea of killing.Very soon Desmond was sent to serve as a war medic to offer medical service to the wounded soldiers. As a soldier in the WWII, he still held the record of fighting in battles without killing anyone.Instead, he successfully saved many soldiers and got them out of the battle field.Without him, many of the badly hurt soldiers might have died in wars. Desmond himself was also wounded three times during the war. He died at home in 2006.Hacksaw Ridge, the movie about Desmond was in Chinese theatres on December 2016 and got many awards in America. When I was in theatre watching it, I didn’t quite enjoy it at first. To be honest, I didn’t believe anyone could do it like the hero in the movie which looked like another American superhero movie.Second reason was the movie was dubbed a Chinese voice. So it lost its original touch of a great movie.Anyway, it’s a successful movie without doubt.
When we talk about the war medics, most Chinese will tell stories of the famous Canadian doctor who helped Chinese soldiers during the WWII, doctor Henry Norman Bethune. His story has been in Chinese school textbooks for many years. I don’t know if it’s still in the books nowadays, but when I was a primary school student, we were taught about him and his stories.Henry was born in Canada in 1890 and joined the Canadian Communist party in 1935. He came to China to help Chinese fight the Japanese invasion as a doctor in 1938.At that time China needed a lot of professional medics as too many soldiers needed medical treatment at war.During the war time from November 1938 to February 1939, he did around 300 operations, set up 13 medical camps, and saved many lives. He also set up medical schools training Chinese doctors and nurses with medical textbooks he wrote for the war.Unfortunately accident happened to Bethune in October 1939, when he was trying to save a wounded soldier at war in Hebei, one of his fingers as cut and got infected. Then he passed away a month later. Chairman Mao said he was a great man without personal interest, a man for the people.
Medical staff are very important and hugely needed during the war time. Memorial day in America can date back to the time of American civil war period. It was called Decoration day at that time. It’s a day to remember the Americans who died in action of wars. Now it starts on the last Monday of each May.To many people, it also marks the beginning of the summer time.As it’s a three-day holiday, many will go to the beach, have a barbeque in excitement. It seems the real meaning of the day tends to get lost.Next you will hear a friendship made in the battle field, the relation between a soldier and medic who had his back in the Vietnam war. It started in 1967 during the Vietnam war.Close to 500,000 US. troops served overseas, including K. Lee and John Nordeen. Lee was 22, a combat medic from San Francisco, and John was 20, a soldier from Seattle. They were sent to the same platoon. They became good friends in the army and lost touch after the war. After one fight, Lee was surprised to see the bullet holes on John’s helmet and their platoon became much smaller. They lost ten guys in just ten days. They survived together. After the war, they came back to the US.Both of them didn’t try to contact each other.AS John lost many friends in action, he didn’t want to make friends again so he had a very small circle of friends.Later John thought about Lee.One day he found a telephone book and started going through pages after pages by the name K.Lee in the Bay area.He made hundreds of calls and what’s interesting is a man was impressed by John’s story and also joined him finding the real K.Lee. Finally they found him. They met on the Chinese Mid- Autumn festival, a day to celebrate family, gratitude and reunions.15 years later they sat down to remember how they met during the war. (Audio 1)
Next you will hear a story about how a brief connection in Afghanistan led to a chance of reuniting a decade later.Retired first sergeant Keath Melic spent three decades in the military, saved a number of soldiers. He briefly met with those wounded soldiers but barely knew or made friends with any of them through the critical moment of his medical care, except Roy Wilcons, a soldier who served in Afghanistan. Until 2014, in North Carolina he met face to face with Roy Wilcons again. He told Roy he was the one who pulled him out of the exploded car. On the way of Roy’s mission in the field, their car was bombed and the car became pieces. Keath was behind Roy’s car and didn’t expect anyone to be alive out of the car.But he pulled Roy out.The moment Roy woke up, he heard a voice which stuck in his ears for many years, that’s “I got you!”. Keath and Roy keep in regular touch now.(Audio 2) That’s Keath and Roy telling their story. The last story today is from Marshal Dubar, an air force reservist in Iraq. After soldiers get killed in action, usually someone in the military will give them the final salute, then loaded them on the plane and send their bodies home. But the thing is not many would show up to do this job, usually there are volunteers needed. She took the job easier than she thought at first. She thought it’s nothing but coffins, and loading the plane. Then later she couldn’t remember how many she sent home. They just kept coming one after another. That’s why many say no to the volunteer work, but as she said someone gotta do it. She even felt a little guilty when she works because she’s the one who made it back, while the others didn’t. (Audio3)
