The Father, His Son, and their Donkey

A Father and his son are going to the market to sell their Donkey. On the way, two girls walk behind them.
一个父亲和他的儿子要去市场卖他们的驴子。在路上，两个女孩走在他们后面。

Silly: Look there, Susan! How foolish they are!
傻蛋:看那儿，苏珊!他们真愚蠢!

Susan: What do you mean?
苏珊:什么意思?

Silly: It’s a hot day, right?
傻蛋:今天很热，对吧?

Susan: Yes, it’s very hot.
苏珊:是的，非常热。

Silly: Well then, why are they walking? They have a Donkey. Why don’t they ride it?
傻蛋:那他们为什么走路?他们有一头驴。他们为什么不骑呢?

Susan: Hey, you’re right. They are very foolish. Ha, ha, ha!

The two girls keep laughing. The Father hears the two girls. He thinks they are right. He puts his son on the Donkey.
两个女孩一直在笑。父亲听到了两个女孩的声音。他认为他们是对的。他把儿子放在驴上。

Father: It’s a hot day today, son. You must be tired. Get on the Donkey. Ride it to the market.
父亲:儿子，今天真热。你一定累了。骑上驴。骑着它去市场。

son: Thank you, Father. But, how about you?
儿子:谢谢你，爸爸。但是，你呢?

Father: I’m fine, son. Don’t worry about me. Let’s just hurry. We’ll be late.

The Father and the son go only a few meters. They pass by a group of old men who are resting under the shade.
父亲和儿子只走了几米。他们经过一群在树荫下休息的老人。

Old man1: Everyone, look there! The Father is walking. And the son is riding on the Donkey.
老人1:大家看那儿!父亲正在散步。儿子骑在驴子上。

Old man2: What an ungrateful son!
老人2:多么忘恩负义的儿子啊!

Old man 3: Young people, these days… They don’t respect the elderly.
老人3:现在的年轻人……他们不尊重老人。

Old man1: Poor man. Look at him sweat. He looks tired.
老人1:可怜的人。看他流汗。他看起来很累。

Old man2: Why is the son riding the Donkey? He is young. He should walk.
老人2:儿子为什么骑驴?他是年轻的。他应该走路。

Old man3: He must be a bad son.
老人3:他一定是个坏儿子。

The Father hears the old men. He thinks they are right. He tells his son to get off the Donkey.
父亲听到了老人的声音。他认为他们是对的。他叫儿子从驴上下来。

Father: Get off, son. It’s my turn. I’ll ride the Donkey now.
父亲:滚开，儿子。轮到我了。我现在要骑驴。

son: Yes, Father. You must be tired.
儿子:是的,爸爸。你一定累了。

Father: Let’s go, son.
父亲:走吧，儿子。

Now the Father is riding the Donkey. Then a Mother with her child sees them.
现在父亲骑着驴。然后一位母亲带着她的孩子看到了他们。

Mother: Tsk, tsk. What a terrible Father! He rides the Donkey. And his little son walks. The poor boy looks tired. He is also sweating. The man must be a bad Father. Tsk, tsk.
母亲:啧啧,啧啧。多么可怕的父亲!他骑着驴。他的小儿子走路。这个可怜的男孩看起来很累。他也在流汗。这个人一定是个坏父亲。啧啧,啧啧。

The Father hears this. He thinks she is right. He tells his son to climb up on the Donkey with him.
父亲听见了。他认为她是对的。所以他叫儿子爬上驴子跟自己一起骑驴。

Father: Son, come up here with me. You must be tired, too. Let’s ride the Donkey together.
父亲:儿子，跟我上来。你一定也累了。让我们一起骑驴吧。

son: That’s okay, Father. I don’t mind walking.
儿子:没关系，爸爸。我不介意走路。

Father: Just get on, son. People will think I am a bad Father.
父亲:上来吧，儿子。人们会认为我是一个坏父亲。

son: Okay, Father, if you insist.
儿子:好吧，爸爸，如果你坚持的话。

The son gets on the Donkey behind his Father.
儿子爬上了跟父亲一起骑驴，他坐在父亲身后。

Father: Come on, Donkey. Giddy up, giddy up. Let’s go faster. We are late.
父亲:来吧，驴子。驾（快跑），驾（快跑）。我们走快点。我们迟到了。

The two pass by a field. A Farmer sees them.
两人经过一片田野。一个农民看到了他们。

Farmer: Look at that poor Donkey! It looks so pale. How selfish those two are! They have strong legs. Why don’t they just walk? They should be ashamed.
农夫:看那头可怜的驴子!它看起来很苍白。那两个人真自私!他们有强壮的腿。他们为什么不步行呢?他们应该感到羞耻。

Father: He is right, son. The Donkey does look pale. We were too selfish. Let’s carry the Donkey from here, son.
父亲:他说得对，儿子。驴子的脸色确实很苍白。我们太自私了。孩子，我们把驴从这里抬走吧。

The Father and son tie the Donkey’s legs to a pole and carry it together on their shoulders.
父子俩把驴腿绑在一根杆子上，扛在肩上。

Father: Let’s cross that bridge quickly. The market is right across the river, son.
父亲:我们快过那座桥吧。孩子，市场就在河对面。

son: Yes, Father. But this Donkey is getting heavy. And I am getting tired.
儿子:是的,爸爸。但是这头驴越来越重了。我累了。

As they cross the bridge, people on the other side of the bridge see the Father, the son, and the Donkey. They start laughing.
当他们过桥时，桥的另一边的人看到了父亲、儿子和驴子。他们开始大笑。

Man: Look over there!
男:看那边!

Woman: Why are they carrying the Donkey?
女人:他们为什么背着驴?

Man: Who knows? But it looks silly.
男:谁知道呢?但这看起来很愚蠢。

Woman: You’re right. It really does look silly. Ha, ha, ha!!!(loud laughter)
女:你是对的。它看起来确实很傻。哈,哈,哈! ! !(大声笑)。

The Donkey gets frightened by their loud laughter. The Donkey tries to free himself.
Donkey: Hee-haw! Hee-haw!
驴子被他们的大笑吓坏了。驴子试图挣脱。
驴:驴叫声!驴叫声!

Father: Stay still, Donkey!!! We are almost there!
父亲:别动，驴子!!我们快到了!

son: I can’t hold on any longer, Father! The Donkey is too strong!
儿子:我再也坚持不住了，爸爸!驴子太强壮了!

Just then…(Hee-haw! Hee-haw!) The Donkey falls into the water.
就在那时…(驴叫声!驴叫声!)驴子掉进了水里。

Father: Oh no! He fell in! Jump in and get him, son!
父亲:噢,不!他了!跳进去抓住他，孩子!

son: But Father, the water is too deep! And I can’t swim!
儿子:可是爸爸，水太深了!我不会游泳!

Father: Look!Look! It’s drifting away! Poor Donkey!
父亲:看!看!它漂走了!可怜的驴!

son: What are we going to sell now, Father?
儿子:爸爸，我们现在要卖什么?

MORAL:You can’t please everyone.
寓意:你不可能取悦所有人。
