The Golden Ax
金斧头

It is a hot summer's day. A woodcutter is cutting wood in the forest.
这是个炎热的夏日，一个砍柴人正在森林里砍柴。

woodcutter1:It's a very hot today. (He wipes his forehead.) But I must cut more wood. My mother is very sick. I must buy her some medicine.
砍柴人甲:今天真热啊！（他擦了擦额头）不过我得再多砍一些柴。妈妈病得很厉害，我得给她买些药。

The woodcutter is busy cutting wood.Suddenly, his ax slips from his hands and goes flying into a nearby pond.
砍柴人忙着砍柴。突然，他的斧头从手中滑了出去，飞落到附近的池塘里。

woodcutter1:Oh, no! My ax fell into the pond! That was my only ax! I still have to cut more wood. What shall I do? My poor mother!
砍柴人甲：哦，不！我的斧头掉进了池塘里！那是我唯一的斧头！我还要砍很多柴呢。我该怎么办？我可怜的妈妈！

The woodcutter sits near the pond and just stares into the water. Then he starts to cry.
砍柴人坐在池塘边，盯着水面。然后他开始哭泣。

spirit:Young man, why are you crying?
精灵：年轻人，你为什么哭呢？

woodcutter1:My ax fell in the pond. It's my only ax. I can't get it out.
砍柴人甲：我的斧头掉到池塘里了。那是我唯一的斧头，我拿不回来了。

spirit:You are crying because of an ax?
精灵：你是为了一把斧头哭吗？
woodcutter1:No. I am crying because of my poor mother. I have to cut a lot of wood to buy my mother's medicine, but without my ax, I can't cut any wood.
砍柴人甲：不，是因为我可怜的妈妈。我得砍很多柴来给妈妈买药。但是，没有斧头，我一根柴也砍不了。

spirit:Hmmm... well then, I shall find your ax, just wait here.
精灵：嗯.......那好吧，我会找到你的斧头，你在这里等一会。

The spirit disappears into the pond for a few minutes and comes out with a shiny ax.
精灵消失在池塘里，几分钟后，他拿着一把亮闪闪的斧头出来了。

spirit:Is this your ax?
精灵：这是你的斧头吗?

woodcutter1:No, sir. That's not my ax. That ax is made of gold.
砍柴人甲：不是，先生。这不是我的斧头。这把斧头是金子做的。

spirit:Are you sure? Look again!
精灵:你确定吗？再看一下。

woodcutter1:Yes, I am very sure. That's not my ax.
砍柴人甲：没错，我非常确定。那不是我的斧头。

spirit:Wait again. I will be back.
精灵：再等一会。我马上回来。

The spirit disappears into the pond again and comes back with another ax.
精灵再度消失在池塘里，然后带着另外一把斧头出来了。

spirit:Is this your ax?
精灵：这是你的斧头吗?

woodcutter1:No, no! That's not my ax, either. That is a silver ax. My ax is not made of silver.
砍柴人甲：不，不！这也不是我得斧头。这是一把银斧头。我的斧头不是银子做的。

spirit:Look carefully!
精灵：看仔细点儿！

woodcutter1:My ax is made of iron. That one isn't mine.
砍柴人甲：我的斧头是铁做的，这把不是我的。

spirit:I am very sorry. This time I will get the right one. Please wait.
精灵：我很抱歉，这次我不会再拿错了。请等一下。

The spirit disappears again and comes back with an iron ax.
精灵又一次消失在池塘里，之后他拿着一把铁斧头出来了。

spirit:Is this ax yours?
精灵：这是你的斧头吗？

woodcutter1:Oh, yes, yes! That's mine! That is my iron ax! You have found it at last. Thank you so much. I shall always be grateful.
砍柴人甲：哦，是的，是的！这是我的！这是我的铁斧头！你终于把它找到了！非常感谢。我会永远感激你的。

spirit:Hum... You are an honest man and a devoted son. I shall give you all three axes. Take them and go home now. Take good care of your mother.
精灵：嗨......你是一个诚实的人，而且是个孝顺的儿子，我把这三把斧头都送给你，现在拿着它们回家吧。好好照顾你妈妈。

woodcutter1:I will. Do not worry. And thank you again.
砍柴人甲：我会的。你放心。再次谢谢你。

The woodcutter goes back to the village and on his way home meets another woodcutter.
砍柴人往村子里走，在回家的路上他遇见另一个砍柴人。

woodcutter2:Hello, there.
砍柴人乙：你好。

woodcutter1:Hello.
砍柴人甲：你好。

The other woodcutter sees the golden and silver axes. He looks very surprised and becomes curious.
第二个砍柴人看到了金斧头和银斧头。他感到非常惊讶，他很好奇。

woodcutter2:Where did you get those golden and silver axes? They must be very expensive.  You are a rich man.
砍柴人乙：你在哪里弄到这金斧头和银斧头的？一定很贵，你是一个富有的人吧？

woodcutter1:I was a poor man, too. But a spirit came out of the pond and gave them to me.
砍柴人甲：我也是个穷人。不过，有一个精灵从池塘出来，把这些斧头给了我。

woodcutter2:What do you mean? Tell me more, please.
砍柴人乙：什么意思？请说详细一点儿。

woodcutter1:Well, I was chopping wood. Then my ax fell into the pond. A spirit came out of the pond and gave these axes to me.
砍柴人甲：嗯，我正在砍柴，后来我的斧头掉进了池塘里。一个精灵从池塘里出来，把这些斧头给了我。
woodcutter2:Where is that pond? Please tell me.
砍柴人乙：那个池塘在哪里？请告诉我！

woodcutter1:It's in the woods.
砍柴人甲：在森林里。

woodcutter2:Okay, thanks! I shall do the same.
砍柴人乙：好，多些。我也要这样做。

woodcutter1:I don't think that is a good idea. But good luck!
砍柴人甲：我觉得这样不好。不过，注意你走运吧！

The other woodcutter goes to the forest and finds the pond. He pretends to be chopping woodand throws his ax in the pond on purpose.
第二个砍柴人来到森林里，找到了那个池塘。他假装砍柴，故意把斧头丢进了池塘里。

woodcutter2:Now, I'll throw my ax in the pond. Whee!
砍柴人乙：现在，我要把斧头丢进到池子里。嘻嘻！

Spirit appears.
精灵出现了。

spirit:Did you drop an ax in my pond?
精灵：是你把斧头扔进了我的池塘里吗？

woodcutter2:Yes, I did! Please help me! Find my ax for me!
砍柴人乙：对，是的！请帮助我吧！帮我找回斧头！

spirit:Just wait here. I will find your ax.
精灵：你在这里等着，我会找回你的斧头的。
The spirit disappears as before and comes out with three axes.
和上一次一样，精灵消失在池塘里，然后带着三把斧头回来了。

spirit:Is this golden ax yours?
精灵：这把金斧头是你的吗？

woodcutter2:Oh, yes! That is mine! Thank you for finding it! Please give it to me now!
砍柴人乙：哦，是的！这是我的！谢谢你帮我找到它！现在请把它给我吧！

spirit:Are you sure? Look again.
精灵：你确定吗？再看一下？

woodcutter2:Of course, I am sure. That's my ax.
砍柴人乙：当然了，我确定。这是我的斧头。

The spirit shows him another ax.
精灵又让他看了另一把斧头。

spirit:Then how about this ax? Is this silver ax yours, too?
精灵：那么这把斧头呢？这把银斧头也是你的吗？

woodcutter2:Oh my goodness! That is also my ax, give it to me!
砍柴人乙：哦，天啊！这也是我的斧头。把它给我吧！

spirit:This silver ax is yours? Then how about this iron ax?
精灵：这把银斧头也是你的？那么这把铁斧头呢？

The spirit shows the other woodcutter his real ax.
精灵把这个砍柴人自己的斧头给他看了一下。

woodcutter2:No, no! That is not my ax. You can have that ax, old man. My axes are only made of gold and silver. Give me my axes!
砍柴人乙：不，不！这不是我的斧头。你拿着吧。老先生。我的斧头是用金子和银子做的。把我的斧头给我吧！

Suddenly, the whole forest turns dark, and thunder and lighting strikes.
突然，整个森林暗了下来，电闪雷鸣。

spirit:Go back to your village! You are a greedy man and also a terrible liar! Gome home nowbefore you are punished!
精灵：回到你的村子里去吧！你是一个贪婪的人，还是一个可怕的骗子！在你受到惩罚之前，赶紧回家吧！

woodcutter2:Oh, no! Please forgive me! At least give back my iron ax!
砍柴人乙：哦，不！请原谅我！至少，把我的铁斧头还给我吧？

The spirit disappears into the pond without saying another word.
精灵什么也没说，消失在了池塘里。

woodcutter2:I won't be greedy again! Please come back! Give me back my iron ax!
砍柴人乙：我不会再贪心了！请回来吧！把我的铁斧头还给我吧！

The other woodcutter kept pleading, but the spirit didn't come back. It was too late.
这个砍柴人不断地哀求，可是精灵没有回来。一切都太迟了。

woodcutter2:Now I have nothing. What shall I do? Boo-boo...
砍柴人乙：现在我什么都没有了。我该怎么办？呜......呜......

Moral:Honest and diligent men are rewarded and greedy men are punished.
寓意：诚实和勤奋的人终会得到奖励，贪婪的人也会受到惩罚。
