Welcome to today’s Real story.I’m Frank X. In my past shows, I told many stories about the black people in America.I was surprised at one of my English classes, when I asked my students if they knew about Martin Luther King, and almost all of them said no. Actually a lot of Chinese people don’t know this name, or much about the history of blacks’ struggle in fighting for their equal rights to the white Americans. It’s a long and difficult road. You may say “who cares?”or something like we are in China and we don’t have to know it.Yes in a way to some people, it’s ok if they don’t know.I have to say, it’s not bad to know something about the blacks, how they were treated before and now.Even today, the black people sometimes are treated unfairly in America. They say black lives matter.Of course everyone’s life matters.

I first knew about Martin Luther King, the black hero in American history, back in college in 2001. My teacher asked us to read Martin’s famous speech “I have a dream”. I was really impressed by the way he put in his speech, beautiful and powerful. I could imagine how the people in the protest felt at that moment. Imagine you are speaking to thousands of people supporting you. The most beautiful part of his speech was he mentioned “I have a dream ”many times. He said: “I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history of our nation. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day, on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.” His famous speech was made on August 28, 1963 at a parade for blacks’ equal right to work and freedom. Martin worked as a priest at a church in 1954.He got the doctor’s degree the next year.He set up many clubs and organized many activities against the discriminations, and he slowly became famous among the black people in the US., being an equal right leader to protect the blacks. When he made the above speech in public, the protest attracted more than 200 thousand people and he won the Nobel peace prize in 1964.

During his time when the blacks were discriminated, they even were not allowed to sit next to the white people. Martin was a hero not only because he got the support from the blacks, but also from the white Americans. Now there’s Martin Luther King Day, and each year on this special day, public schools and government offices have a day off, to celebrate what he did to change the American society for the better, especially for the blacks. Many still remember what he said: Let’s find the light and love together. Martin Luther King was shot dead at a hotel in 1968 at only 39 years old, five years after his famous speech “I have a dream.” (music*******)

In 1963, more than a dozen African American teenage girls were arrested for protesting segregation laws in Americus, Georgia. They spent one night in the country jail, but were quickly sent outside the city, where they spent the next two months locked inside a stockade. In the next story, the Leesburg girls share an overlooked moment in civil rights history. The stockade looked like designed to keep animals, but the girls were locked there, with flies, insects and everything dirty around them. They were not treated like human beings, but they were strong enough to face the hard and dirty situation. After a month locked in the stockade, they hoped someone would come to rescue them but nobody came, and they were crying and crying a lot, missing their home. The news of them came to their families, but none of their families could afford the money to get them out. (Audio1)

Fortunately, a student committee learned about them and they sent someone to take the pictures of them where they were locked. Finally they were freed from the stockade in September 1963.50 years later after their release, four girls sat down to share how they felt when were out of the place. (Audio2)

The stockade girls had a reunion in 2015.One of the girls, Verna said she was married and had a son called Joseph.Verna and her son talked about her experience.(Audio 3)

That’s the talk between Verna and her son Joseph. She died in 2017 at 68. Decades later, the stockade is still there. It looks the same as 50 years ago. No history book or any record show what happened in 1963 there, but the history of what happened to the four girls lives on. For these women, this part of their lives carries with them always. None of the stockade girls were charged with crime after they were set free.
