The World Is Too Much with Us
By William Wordsworth

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon,
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not. --Great God! I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn.

1.William Wordsworth (1770-1850)
- Interest in the life and speech of “common people” during the contact with French Revolution
- His joint publication “Lyrical Ballads” with Samuel Taylor Coleridge marked the birth of Romanticism in English literature.
- “Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility”

2.The Lake poets
- The Lake poets: a group of English poets who all lived in the Lake District of England in the first half of the nineteenth century
- Three main figures of “the Lake Poets”: William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Robert Southey
- A tourist attraction today: Dove Cottage, Grasmere, Lake District

3.The World Is Too Much with Us (1802)
- Reflects upon men’s relationship to nature
E.g. “sea”, “winds” - represent the power of nature which people no longer respected
- Criticizes materialism in the First Industrial Revolution
E.g. “Little we see in Nature that is ours” - greediness
“ a sordid boon” - oxymoron. “Sordid” means immoral or dishonest, while “boon” is a blessing. Acknowledges benefits brought by machinery, but still criticizes them.
- Whose central theme can even be applied to the modern society
E.g. Social-networking sites? Technology? (My EPS experience)

创作于1802年的“The World Is Too Much with Us”反思了第一次工业革命下人与自然的关系。 “Little we see in Nature that is ours” 点出人们的贪婪,想将自然中的一切都据为己有。 Is it a sordid boon?
