Funeral Blues
by W.H.Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

将大海倒空,将森林扫除;

1.A classic elegy by W.H.Auden
- First appeared as a satiric eulogy for a politician in The Ascent of F6 (1937), a satiric play written by Auden, then a "Cabaret Song" about lost love.
- Became well-known because of its recitation in Four Weddings and A Funeral (1994).
- W.H.Auden: one of the greatest 20th century British-American poet, once visited China during the Sino-Japanese War and composed 23 poems concerning war-time China.

2.Theme
- Hopelessness and sense of void after experiencing lost of a beloved one
- The dead: a public figure and an intimate beloved one to the narrator
- Building up silence in the first stanza, emphasizing on the moaning of the aeroplane in the second stanza
- Using verbs of which agent is usually human to convey the narrator’s hopelessness: the world is empty without his/her beloved one. (e.g. put out the stars, pack up the moon, dismantle the sun, pour away the ocean, sweep up the wood)
