To a Child Dancing in The Wind
By William Butler Yeats

DANCE there upon the shore;
What need have you to care
For wind or water's roar?
And tumble out your hair
That the salt drops have wet;
Being young you have not known
The fool's triumph, nor yet
Love lost as soon as won,
Nor the best labourer dead
And all the sheaves to bind.
What need have you to dread
The monstrous crying of wind!

带咸味的海水滴落你的发稍;
你也难以知晓;

1.The Dancing Child or Girl?
- It is said that the “dancing child in the wind” refers to Iseult, daughter of Maude Gonne, who had been Yeat’s lifelong muse. Though not Iseult’s biological father, Yeats was her mentor and the closest person to an encouraging father.
- At the age of 15, Iseult proposed to Yeats, but he turned her down.
- The carefree, fearless dancing child resembles the mercurial, bold Iseult.

2.Tension between childhood innocence and potential adulthood darkness
- The dancing child represents childhood innocence and fearlessness while the wind, water's roar and the monstrous crying of the wind symbolizes the dark side of adulthood.
- “The fool’s triumph”, ”love lost and won”, “best labourer dead” refer to harsh realities of adulthood.

3.Ambivalent mood towards the child
- Depiction of the harsh reality suggests the child’s ultimate destruction.
- Meanwhile, Yeats seems to bear a touch of envy of the freedom of childhood.
