On The Balcony
by D. H. Lawrence
In front of the sombre mountains, a faint, lost ribbon of rainbow;
And between us and it, the thunder;
And down below in the green wheat, the labourers
Stand like dark stumps, still in the green wheat.
You are near to me, and your naked feet in their sandals,
And through the scent of the balcony's naked timber
I distinguish the scent of your hair: so now the limber
Lightning falls from heaven.
Adown the pale-green glacier river floats
A dark boat through the gloom - and whither?
The thunder roars. But still we have each other!
The naked lightnings in the heavens dither
And disappear - what have we but each other?
The boat has gone.
1.The controversial D.H.Lawrence
- Usually recognized as a British modernist writer
- A controversial figure in terms of his radical political opinions and disputable attitudes on feminism
- Once received a trail on obscene contents in his last novel “Lady Chatterley’s Lover”
- The Penguin Books’ publisher's dedication: "For having published this book, Penguin Books were prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act, 1959 at the Old Bailey in London from 20 October to 2 November 1960. This edition is therefore dedicated to the twelve jurors, three women and nine men, who returned a verdict of 'Not Guilty' and thus made D. H. Lawrence's last novel available for the first time to the public in the United Kingdom."
2.Man and nature
- Various images of nature: rainbow, thunder, lightning, green wheat, timber
- Images of human beings: the narrator and his companion (depicted as individuals) vs the labourers (depicted as a passive collective)
- Interaction between man and nature through senses: “ And through the scent of the balcony's naked timber/I distinguish the scent of your hair”
3.Isolation and nakedness
- Although the narrator and his companion seemed isolated from the rest of the world (the still labourers, the dark boat disappearing into gloom), faint and lost like the rainbow, they still bore a gleam of hope because they had each other.
- Why Lawrence stresses “nakedness” as in “naked feet”, “naked timber” and “naked lightning”? To what extent does it demonstrate Lawrence’s idea of sexuality and human instinct?
