In Britain, four out of the top 10 bestsellers are coloring books for adults. And this is Frank Mars Learning English, I’m Frank Mars, we are talking about coloring books for adults today. Scottish illustrator Johanna Basford's titles, "Secret Garden" and "Enchanted Forest," claimed the top two spots, ahead of Harper Lee's much anticipated second novel "Go Set a Watchmen".Basford's debut book, "Secret Garden," has sold 1.4 million copies worldwide to date, according to The Guardian. It features intricate black-and-white drawings of the plants and flowers that surround the illustrator's home in rural Scotland. The popularity of the adult coloring book seems to be riding a wave of nostalgia. Now, "preschool for adults" is a thing that exists. Basford says the books provide a connection to the past, as well as an outlet for stress."I think it is really relaxing, to do something analogue, to unplug,""And it's creative. ... So many people have said to me that they used to do secret colouring-in when their kids were in bed. Now it is socially acceptable, it's a category of its own." If you're like me, you didn't realize coloring for adults was a trend. What is it about these books that has made them so popular with adults? Basford said that when she first pitched publishers the idea of a grownup coloring book four years ago, "colouring for adults wasn't the trend it is now. You can imagine how quiet they went after I suggested it."For starters, The Guardian calls them "terribly therapeutic." User reviews give us a glimpse, too: I am an adult colorer or is it colorist??? Whatever, I love this book. So relaxing to sit down with this book and my adult colored pencils and just color away to my heart's content. Still, that doesn't quite explain what motivates adults to color rather than, say, draw or paint or just doodle. Is it about nostalgia? Or do stressed-out adults feel comforted by the very nature of returning to an activity for small children? Is it about ceding control of a task, or making something with zero pressure? Or is it something else entirely? But aside from simply being a break from work, experts overwhelmingly conclude that play benefits adults immensely. In coloring specifically, psychologists believe that the activity excites brain areas related to motor skills, the senses and creativity. It’s even prescribed as a relaxation and de-stressing technique. While some may ignore such activities as a symptom of Peter Pan Syndrome or a waste of time, this isn’t the first time that research has supported the importance of play for adults. It’s believed that adults, just like children, can benefit from play breaks, which are believed to be essential for problem solving, creativity and even relationships.See how doctor Cooper Lawrence talks about coloring books for adults:*****(doctor at the interview)############# There's a game many people like to play: What would you do if there was no internet? What would entertainment be? What would you do for fun, or to relax? It's a horrifying idea for most of us, but as people chew on the question, they get excited. Just "doing nothing," for most of us, means scrolling through social networks or checking an app, even if it's via the couch. Maybe Basford has plugged into a vast and unacknowledged desire to really, actually do nothing—to let the brain take over, without the murmur of technology as an ever-present cognitive buffer.Or maybe it's a viral trend. Suit yourself. Question today:Do you think coloring pictures can relieve stress?
