Oracle began to significantly reduce its workforce Tuesday while it continues to build out costly data centers for artificial-intelligence development.
The cloud-computing and database company is cutting jobs across its business lines, according to employees and several posts on LinkedIn. On social media, workers who said they were based in the U.S. and India posted about their positions being eliminated.
Some affected employees told The Wall Street Journal that they had received an early morning email from "Oracle Leadership" that thanked them for their work and informed them it was their last day.
The full scope of the layoffs isn’t yet clear, but some employees said internal metrics show the count of reductions thus far in the thousands. Analysts at investment bank TD Cowen earlier this year predicted Oracle would shed as many as 30,000 workers and sell some of its assets as it finances its AI infrastructure projects.
Shares in the company are down nearly 50% in the past six months as investors have expressed concern about the feasibility of its data-center-financing plan. The company raised its sales outlook in its most recent earnings report, while saying demand for AI continues to outpace supply.
Oracle recently outlined in a regulatory filing that it would spend $500 million more on restructuring costs in the current fiscal year than previously reported, suggesting an acceleration in its job-cutting program. Oracle's project with OpenAI, known as Stargate, calls for several data centers in the next few years. Investors and analysts also consider the deal one of the riskiest because Oracle is taking on tens of billions in debt to partner with the unprofitable OpenAI.
