 Set in 1980s Ireland, the story follows Conor, a teenage boy trapped in a suffocating life marred by school bullying and family quarrels. A casual remark from transfer student Raphina—"I need band photos taken"—becomes the catalyst for his escape from adversity. He recruits several "amateur" classmates to form the band Sing Street channeling the confusion, restlessness, and longing for freedom of adolescence through music in its purest form: writing lyrics in class, playing on shabby instruments, and rehearsing in a factory. 
Director John Carney uses music as an emotional bond, letting the passion of 1980s rock and the delicacy of ballads serve as the "narration" of the plot; the ending also breaks free from clichés. Conor and Raphina sail away into the distance on a small boat—they don’t achieve "fame and success," yet it perfectly captures the true meaning of youth: you may not be able to change the world overnight, but you can bravely march toward your own "new world" with passion.
