Jack and Annie stood still for a long moment.
杰克和安妮一动不动地站在原地很长时间。

Annie spoke first. “Well, I guess the tall ninja was pointing to the east, ” she said. “I guess that’s the way we go.”
安妮先说话了，“那么，我猜那个高个子忍者指的方向就是东边。”她说，“我想我们该走那边。”

“Wait,” said Jack. “I need to write some stuff down.”
“等等。”杰克说，“我必须记下点东西。”

He took out his notebook. In the moonlight, he wrote：

“Look, Jack, ” whispered Annie. “Do I look like a ninja?”

He looked at her. She had pulled her sweatshirt hood over her head and tied the strings tightly.
他看着她，她把她运动服后的帽子给罩在头上了，然后把绳子拉得紧紧的。

She did look like a ninja—a very small one.

“Good idea, ” Jack whispered. He pulled his hood up, too.

“Okay, let’s go, ” said Annie.
“好了，我们走。”安妮说。

Jack put his notebook away. Then he and Annie headed east into the woods.
杰克把他的笔记本放好，然后他和安妮朝着东边走进了树林。

They slipped between trees. And more trees. And more trees.
他们穿过了一些树，又穿过一些树，然后穿过了更多的树。所有的树看上去都是一样的，杰克都搞糊涂了，他们走的是正确的方向吗?

All the trees looked the same. Jack got confused. Were they still going in the right direction?
“Wait, ” he said.
“等一下。”杰克说。

Annie stopped. They both stared at the woods around them.
安妮停下了脚步，他们凝视着四周的树木。

“Do you think we’re still going east?” asked Jack.
“你觉得我们还是在往东方走吗?”杰克问道。

“I guess so,” said Annie.
“我猜是的。”安妮说。

“We can’t just guess,” said Jack. “We have to know for sure.”
“我们不能光猜。”杰克说，“我们必须确定。”

“How do we do that?” said Annie. “We don’t have a compass.”
“我们怎么确定?”安妮说，“我们没有指南针。”

Just then the master’s words came back to Jack.
就在这时，忍者头目的话浮现在杰克耳边。

“The ninja master said to use nature, ” he said.
“忍者头头说要利用自然。”他说。

“How do we do that?” said Annie.
“怎么用?”安妮说。

“Wait, I remember something—” Jack closed his eyes.
“等等，我记得一些——”杰克闭上了他的眼睛。

He remembered something in a camping book. Now what was it?
他记得露营书上的一些东西，是什么呢?

He opened his eyes. “I’ve got it! First we need a stick, ” he said.
他睁开眼睛，“我想起来了!首先我们需要一根棍子。”他说。

Annie picked up a stick. “Here—” she said.
安妮捡起一根棍子，“给你——”她说。

“Great, now we just need a space with moonlight, ” said Jack.
“好极了，现在我们只需要一个有月光的地方。”杰克说。

“There—” said Annie.
“那儿——”安妮说。

They moved into a moonlit space between the shadows.
他们跑到树影中间一处有月光的地方。

“Now push the stick into the ground, ” Jack said.
“现在把棍子立在地上。”杰克说。

Annie pushed the stick into the ground.
安妮把棍子立在了地上。

“The stick’s shadow looks like it’s more than six inches, ” said Jack. “What do you think?”
“棍子的影子看起来长于6英寸(注：1英寸=2.54厘米)。”杰克说，“你觉得呢?”

“It looks like it, ” said Annie.
“看上去好像有那么长。”安妮说。

“Okay. Then that means the shadow’s pointing east,” said Jack.
“那好，也就是说这个影子指向东边。”杰克说。

“Neat, ” said Annie.
“太棒了!”安妮说。

“So that way is east!” Jack pointed to a new direction. “At least I hope it is.”
“所以，那边才是东边。”杰克指着一个新的方向说，“至少希望如此。”

“We’re real ninjas now!” said Annie.
“我们现在是真正的忍者了!”安妮说。

“Yep,” said Jack. “Maybe we are. Come on!”
“没错。”杰克说，“可能是这样的，走吧!”

They took off—heading east, they hoped.
他们出发了——朝着东边，希望真的是东边。

Soon they were out of the pine woods and walking down the rocky mountainside. They moved slowly from rock to rock. Finally they rested against a giant rock.
不久他们就走出了松树林，朝着乱石嶙峋的山下走去。他们在大石头间缓慢地穿行，最后靠在一个巨大的岩石边停下来休息。

“Let’s check our direction again,” said Jack.
“让我们再检查一遍我们的方位。”杰克说。

Annie stuck another stick into the dirt.
安妮又把一根小木棍插进了土里。

“There, ” he said. He pointed to the shadow on the ground. “That way—”
“那儿。”杰克说，他指了指地上影子的方向，“那个方向——”

Annie peeked over the rock, down the mountain.
安妮从岩石上偷偷地向山下望了望。

“Yikes, ” she said softly.
“我的妈呀!”她小声说。

Jack looked, too. His heart nearly stopped.
杰克也看了看，他的心跳都差点停了。

There were flames of fire coming up the mountain. The samurai!
一些火光正朝着山上来了，是武士!

Jack and Annie ducked behind the rock.
杰克和安妮在岩石后面蹲下了。

Squeak, said the mouse.
吱吱。吱吱。

“Quiet, Peanut, ” said Annie.
“安静，花生!”安妮说

Jack reached into his pack. He pulled out the ninja book.
杰克伸手去摸他的包，抽出了那本忍者的书。

“I hope something in here can help us, ” he said.
“希望里面有什么东西可以帮助我们。”他说。

Jack flipped through page after page until he found what he was looking for. It was a picture of warriors wearing bamboo armor. They were holding swords. He read：
杰克一页又一页地翻着书，直到他找到了他想要的东西。那是一张画有日本武士的图片，图中的武士都穿着竹制的盔甲，他们手持利剑。
他读道：

The samurai were fierce Japanese fighters. They carried two swords to cut down their enemies.
武士是日本一些残暴的斗士，他们手拿两把利剑用于砍杀他们的敌人。

Annie tapped Jack on the shoulder. Jack looked at her.
安妮轻轻地拍了拍杰克的肩膀，杰克看着她。

She pointed up the mountain.
她向山上指了指。

A figure was coming down toward them. He was very near.
一个身影正朝他们走下来，已经非常近了。

In the moonlight, his bamboo armor was shining. His two swords were gleaming.
在月光下，他的竹制盔甲闪闪发亮，他的两把剑也反着光。

It was a samurai warrior!
是一个日本武士!
