Hey guys, I’m Frank X with Real Story. Today we talk about high school reunions. When I think of high school reunions, I think of the days when I was wasting in high school and many good friends I made in my former high school class. I had my first reunion three years ago in my hometown. Not everyone was there because some of them were impossible to contact. One of them was Nianyou back then, he passed away because of suicide. At the start of the dinner party, everyone was sad as we all knew what it was.Nianyou had a short and poor life before he died.He came from a family that was so poor that they had to live in a kinda dark and old house near the town train station, a very noisy place that people could hear the passing trains very clearly. He finished high school and that’s as far as his family could afford. Nianyou went to a local cooking school and learned to be a cook. A few years later he became a cook in a small local restaurant. Then it’s after another two or three years that I heard of his death. He had a mild mental problem so when he ran into a car accident and stayed in hospital, he jumped off the hospital building. During the time we were friends and deskmates in high school, he never showed a sad face because of his family problems, instead, he was talkative and smiling. After his death, his mom went crazy and missing. I feel grateful that Nianyou was a part of my earlier life, and his smile will stay in my heart forever.
High school life is not sweet to everyone. Some don’t have a great experience at all. They might be bullied, into a lot of fights, or laughed at just because of their height. In America skin color was a big problem in high schools 50 years ago, even now sometimes it is still a problem. So today’s main story is following Dr. William Lynn Weaver, now in 60s, who had a hard time getting into his high school life. He was deeply hurt being a black student so even many years later after he graduated, he has avoided West High School for decades.

Lynn was 14 when he was going to high school in the late 60s, and everything was new to him because it was a all-white school in Knoxville, Tennessee. The school principal suspended him after 30 minutes he got into the school. Some teachers told him that he didn’t belong there almost every day. They had a test and a teacher stood in front of him and snapped his paper and told him time was up. His first report card was all Fs including PE. Everything made him think that he didn’t belong there. He was home one evening and there was a knock on the door. It was his 7th grade science teacher Mr. Hill from the black school. He said he understood he got some trouble and asked him to go back to his tutoring classes. When he passed all the Fs on his report card, he realized he proved the teachers wrong. The disrespect and bully started in the classroom also followed Lynn onto the football field. Lynn together with his brother and a few black students was on the school football team. There were teams that refused to play them because Lynn and some other players were black. Banners, flags in words against the black students on the field. He remembered when he was playing in one match, his brother got injured and was taken out of the field, put his arm in a sling. The crowd went ugly. They were on the visitors’ sideline, and they were coming across the field. Lynn was afraid and he saw his father in the crowd. His father said: “It’s ok, Dad’s here.”The police protected the black players and sent them out of the field. Normally when one’s in a team, it’s natural all the members stand together, but Lynn never felt that way that the whole team would stand together when things got bad. He graduated from the West High School in 1967.He left the school and never came back. He learned medicine in college and has been teaching surgery across the country. He will be retiring this week. When asked if he had any regrets about going to that high school, he said he didn’t but he came away with a lot of scars. For Lynn telling his story is like a healing process. (Audio 1)*******

After sharing his stories, many people thanked him for his stories and one of the messages caught his attention for a high school reunion. He went back to the high school for the first time in 50 years. The high school has been so different from 50 years ago. In August of 2017, Lynn received an E-mail titled “greetings from West High School” written by the school’s present principal Ashley. She said she heard Lynn’s story and thanked him for his journey at the school including the hard times. It’s a chapter in life that they were not proud of at West High. She invited Lynn to come back to the high school to talk to the students about his journey through life. She said everything was changed at the school many years later. Lynn decided to go see it for himself. So he drove back to the school. He was amazed at what he saw when he got out of the car. So much has been changed. Much of the buildings was hard to recognized.(Audio2) ***

The moment he was surprised at what he saw, he also was joined by his former friends, family members including his former teammate Fred. During their first year at West High Fred stood up to a white upper classman who was bullying Lynn at school. Afterwards Fred was not only expelled but also got threatening calls from many white people. Luckily with some help, Fred returned to the West High later. (Audio 3) ***

The two old friends walked together at the high school again. The same day, the principal welcomed Lynn and his friends into the school auditorium. (Audio 4)*****

The students were shouting “ one west” to welcome Lynn. He took the opportunity to challenge the students and the school to do better for a quality learning experience. Through life Lynn learnt for everything there was always an equal reaction. He got the feeling of hating in high school, but he felt love and change when he returned. (Audio 5)*****
