Taking over this year’s first dispatch, we’ve got ‘Jauri’ the Bogota based multi-faceted artist, who is also deeply involved in the Columbian underground scene. His debut EP on Observant ‘Semilla’ is laden with percussion-fuelled tribal grooves, chugging chord manoeuvres and possessed funk spread across 5 exquisite originals.
The opener ‘Cararu’ scribbles all over the otherworldly techno circus with it’s intricate jungle sounds laid over a forward propelling bass-line that’s often interrupted by curious stabs. Seemingly cohesive the EP continues with ‘Hunjapu’ — a slightly ethnic excursion juxtaposed with hydraulic rhythms. The title track ‘Semilla’ which translates to seed in English builds with a tip-toeing percussive phrase between each bar that’s accentuated with a gritty kick drum. Pleasantly surprising us with his rendition of sci-fi techno, we’re treated to the precise funk of ‘Tarapaca’ where anxious chords and colourful pad layers create exhaustingly gratifying moments. The last offering ‘Yucuna’ a deprived minimalistic rhythm chugs under rippling delay of synth samples with moments of slow disintegration that often leads to a heads down and eyes shut moment.
