1985年，埃塞俄比亚和苏丹的食物短缺、人民挨饿的消息震惊了迈克尔·杰克逊和莱昂纳尔·里奇，两人认为自己该做点什么。于是他们合写了这首歌曲。两人费了四天的时间写作曲，里奇先完成一部分，杰克逊看到后灵感大发，一夜之间就把全曲写好。之后杰克逊又花了两个半小时作词。

1985年1月28日，全美音乐奖颁奖典礼结束后，迈克尔杰克逊号召45位歌手来到位于洛杉矶的A&M录音室，花了一晚上时间录制出了《We Are The World》。
