Harry couldn’t believe it when Tom Tortoise plodded over.
当乌龟Tom拖着沉重的步子走上前时，Harry简直不敢相信自己的眼睛。
“I’ll race you, Harry,” he said quietly.
乌龟平静地说：“我要和你比赛，Harry，”
“Tommy Slowcoach? Are you serious?” asked Harry.
Harry问道：“慢吞吞的Tommy？你是认真的吗？”
“You wouldn’t even get started!”
“你连起跑都做不到！你一定是在逗我吧。”
但Tom用坚定的眼神告诉兔子，他并没有开玩笑。Harry捂着肚子大笑起来：
“Ho ho, that’s a good one!”
“那可真棒！”
Tom不理会Harry的嘲笑，接着慢吞吞地说：
“I mean it,” said Tom. “Let’s have race next Saturday at ten o’clock. You choose where to race.”
“我是认真的。我们把比赛时间定在下周六十点吧。地点你选。”
兔子接受了挑战。但是他觉得乌龟Tom这个决定简直就是在自找苦吃。
“Well, we’ll all have a good laugh anyway.”
“那么，我们之间会有人成为一个笑话。”
For the next few days, the animals talked about nothing else.
在接下来的几天里，动物们所有的话题都是这场比赛。
大家议论纷纷：
“Has Tommy gone crazy?”
“Tommy疯了吗？”
The story was in all the newspapers. It was even on television.
所有的报纸都报道了这件事，它甚至还上了电视。
Harry很重视这场比赛，
Harry trained extra hard.
他的训练更加刻苦了。
He woke up early in the mornings, and went running in the evenings too.
他早上醒得更早了，然后一直跑到晚上。
He knew he would win, but he wanted to win by miles.
他知道自己一定会赢，但他想把差距拉得更大一些。
He chose a good long course for the race.
他还特地为比赛选了一条很长的赛道。
相反，
Tom Tortoise didn’t seem to be training at all.
乌龟Tom似乎并没有进行任何的训练。
Perhaps he thought there was no point.
也许他认为自己再怎么训练也是没有意义的。
朋友们都好奇地问他：
“Don’t you think you should exercise a little?”
“你不觉得你应该做点运动吗？”
但Tom却胸有成竹。
At last, Saturday arrived.
终于，周六到了。
All Harry’s friends came to watch him race.
Harry所有的朋友来观看他比赛。
Tom’s friends were there too, but they didn’t look quite so happy.
Tom的朋友也在那里，只不过他们看起来不太高兴。
It was a beautiful day.
这是个美丽的日子。
Harry saw some television cameras and did a little running specially for them.
Harry看到了一些电视摄像机，television cameras电视摄像机，于是特地在镜头前小跑了几步。
Tom just kept on talking to his friends.
而Tom却一直在和他的朋友们聊天。
Soon it was time for the race to begin. Harry was already at the starting line. Tom slowly ambled over.
很快，比赛要开始了。Harry已经站在了起跑线上，可Tom还是从容不迫的走着。
starting line起跑线。Harry转头望着慢吞吞的Tom说：
“Come on Tommy, let’s not start late.”
“快来啊Tommy！咱们可不能迟到。”
两位选手准备就绪以后，umpire裁判发令了：
“On your marks, get set, GO!” shouted the umpire.
裁判喊道：“各就各位，预备，跑！”。
话音刚落，
Harry raced off and disappeared almost at once.
Harry像离弦的箭一样，几乎一下子就没了踪影。
Everyone laughed as poor Tom plodded over the line.
与此同时，大家都笑了，因为可怜的Tom才刚刚越过起跑线。
