And I thought that as a woman and as a woman around probably the same age, as a lot of these mothers, I could do a good job because of that empathize and connect with them. We really want to focus on the human aspect of it. There really is a stigma associated with microcephaly in Brazil and a prejudice against the disabled in general. Some mothers who had had children with microcephaly had even been abandoned by their partners. Mothers, you know, when they were out with their babies, they would say that people would come up to them and want to look at the size of their child's head to see how small it was.
And you know, once they were in the hospital, with other mothers with babies with microcephaly, it really felt like family. I mean there was a lot of bonding in the hallways of this microcephaly wing. In the face of so much uncertainty about their child's future, their babies that were born with microcephaly were just like any other babies. They do need more care. And they may need even more care in the future. There was just so much love. Many of the women have had to quit their jobs in order to devote all their time to taking care of their children. Having to give up their job really has affected them financially, because they already were living in poverty. With news about the Zika virus out of the headlines, I really hope that the world won't forget about these families.
