The Double Seventh Festival
(七夕节)

It was said that the Emperor of Heaven had seven daughters, all of whom were beautiful and smart.
据说，玉皇大帝有七个女儿[小编注：一说是外孙女]，个个美丽聪慧。

The youngest was the most beautiful and the best at handcrafting, especially weaving. People called her Weaving Maid, or Zhi Nü, in Chinese. From heaven she weaved colorful clouds to beautify the sky.
幺女最是美貌动人，心灵手巧，她最擅长织布，因此人们都叫她“织女”。她在天上织出最鲜艳的云朵，装扮天际。

On the earth, however, there lived a poor orphaned boy named Niu Lang. He lived with his elder brother and sister-in-law, who treated him badly. One day, they gave him an old ox and kicked him out.
在人间，有一个叫“牛郎”的孩子，父母双亡，孤苦伶仃。他跟着刻薄的哥哥嫂子一起过活。有一天，他们送给他一头老牛，就把他赶出了家门。

Niu Lang worked hard, and after a few years he was able to have his own small farm.
牛郎干活肯出力，几年之后，他就给自己挣得了一小片农田。

He was a kind and honest man, but he often felt lonely. He only had his faithful ox to keep him company.
他生性淳朴正直，但心里时常觉得孤独，因为常伴在身边的也唯有那头忠实的老牛而已。

One day, the ox suddenly opened its mouth and started to talk, saying that Weaving Maid and her sisters were going to bathe in the lake nearby and that Niu Lang should go there and steal her clothes while she was in the water. The ox said that she would agree to marry him in exchange for her clothes.
有一天，老牛突然开口说话，它说天上的织女和她的姐姐们即将下到凡间，会去离家不远的一座湖里沐浴。它告诉牛郎赶快赶去那里，趁织女还在湖中洗浴时，把她的衣服偷偷拿走。老牛说，为了要回衣服，织女会答应他的求婚。

And so, Niu Lang did as the ox told him. When the girls come to bathe in the lake, he grabbed Weaving Maid’s clothes. In a panic, the other sisters dashed to their clothes, put them on, and ran away, leaving their sister, Weaving Maid’s, behind.
牛郎听从了老牛的指点。当仙女们在湖中沐浴的时候，他一把抓过织女的衣物。姐妹们大惊失色，纷纷冲过去拿走了各自的衣物，急匆匆穿上离开了，只剩下了最小的妹妹织女。
