The Belt and Road Initiative was proposed in 2013, adhering to the principle of consultation, contribution and shared benefits, and promoting the "five connectivity" of policies, facilities, trade, capital and people-to-people exchanges. Over the past decade, the trade volume between China and the countries along the route has doubled, with bilateral investment exceeding 270 billion US dollars.
