In a 6-3 ruling by Chief Justice Roberts, the Supreme Court has overruled its 1984 Chevron decision, which required reviewing courts to apply a two-step framework in interpreting statutes administered by federal agencies (Loper Bright Enters. v. Raimondo, 144 S. Ct. 2244 (2024); Chevron U.S.A. Inc. v. Nat. Res. Defense Council, Inc., 467 U.S. 837 (1984)). In some cases, the Chevron framework required courts to defer to an agency's interpretation of a statute administered by the agency. The ruling will have important implications for practice areas that are heavily regulated by administrative agencies.
