Ep. 18B: Rachmaninoff Reborn – Rachmaninoff and His Piano Concerto No. 2
OCTOBER 14, 2020 THE COMPOSER CHRONICLES
Today’s episode is Part 2 of a two part episode sharing the decline and revitalization of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff’s career. Today’s episode picks back up after Rachmaninoff’s slink into depression due to the travesty that was the premiere of his Symphony No. 1. Thanks to the help of Dr. Nikolai Dahl, and the composition and successful premiere of his Piano Concerto No. 2, he managed to help himself out of that depression.

The piece was an undeniable success. Rachmaninoff's career as a composer was refreshed and soon the premiere of his symphonic No.1 was a blip of the past. The concerto wasn't just a success for Rachmaninoff. As a gesture of appreciation for everything he did, Rachmaninoff dedicated the concerto to Dr. Dahl for whom this concerto would not exist without.
During more duplications, Dr. Dahl will be publicly recognized as the work's dedicatee.
At a concert in 1926 of the piece, Dr. Dahl was playing viola in the orchestra of the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. Upon the piece's completion, the audience, previously informed of the dedication, honor Dr. Dahl with thunderous applause. The audience refused to quiet down until Dahl rose from his seat and took a well-deserved bow.
一段潦草的节选听写,太喜欢这段描述了,再加上恰到好处的配乐,谁能不为这真挚美好的情谊感动T_T
