In the decade since Tim Bergling released his seminal hit “Levels”—a song so gigantic and absorbing it defined an entire generation of electronic dance music—it has continued to echo throughout festivals and clubs as a sort of sentimental timestamp, the last burning ember of the EDM boom that dissipated as quickly as it hit. Many would argue the track is the era’s pre-eminent artifact—the biggest song from the brightest star—and it’s a prime example of Avicii’s sticky fingerprints: clever sampling (Etta James’ “Something's Got a Hold on Me”), melodic synths and euphoric, larger-than-life drops, all of which have been pressed onto pop music forever.
