It tells a a story that a free-thinking art teacher Catherine teaches conservative 1950s girls at Wellesley College to question their traditional social rules, which helps those students break the shackles and broaden their horizons. At the same time, the woman teacher Catherine gains an insight into women’s social status and learns to treat them with tolerance and respect.As for its advantages, what I should mention is that all the main figures in this film are round characters instead of flat characters, which means they have complex personalities. Catherine dares to hate and love but she is a little egoistic. She doesn’t know what others really need until she understands the significance of listening and tolerance. Joan, as Catherine’s student, receives her instructions, learning to think deeply about the real meaning of life. She finally gains her own view of life and makes her own decision to be a housewife instead of being a graduate student of School of Law at Yale University. In other words, Joan realizes she should follow her own heart instead of completely following Catherine’s suggestions. Betty, on behalf of conservative people, is ignored and even cheated by her husband. Inspired by Catherine, she is determined to divorce her husband and starts to depend on herself. As we can see, the heroine Catherine is not a perfect woman, Joan is not a totally obedient girl and Betty is more than a conservative person. It is the imperfection and variety of their personalities that make their roles life-like.
Even so, there are still some aspects in this film that can be improved. First of all, the changes of characters are too sharp to be persuasive. For example, at the beginning of this film, every student appears to be conceited and arrogant while Catherine acts embarrassedly in the first class. However, she adapts to the situation extremely fast and turns immediately into a wise teacher with feminism. The film doesn’t show the reason why Catherine turns from a timid and shy teacher into an idealistic feminist. If the film demonstrates more details in the transition of Catherine’s character, the narration will be smoother.
