Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures.
艺术家们踊跃参加。国王看完了所有的画。

But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them.
但是只有两幅他真正喜欢的，他要从中做出选择。

One picture was of a calm lake.
一幅画上画的是是一潭平静的湖水。

The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it.
这湖是一面完美的镜子映出周围平静巍峨壮丽的山峰。

Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds.
那之上是有着蓬松云朵的湛蓝色天空。

All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.
有谁看到这幅画都为认为这是一幅展现平静的完美画卷。

The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare.
另一幅也有山峰。不过这些山崎岖不平还光秃秃的。

Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played.

Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall.

This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock.
但当国王凑近那幅画时，他看到瀑布后面，在岩石缝里长着的一小丛灌木。

In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest - in perfect peace.

"Because," explained the king, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work.
