[12:26.09]The first artificial retina has been developed

[12:35.18]This electronic device has been in human clinical trials
[12:39.26]in the U.S. and Europe for several years.
[12:43.05]It is essentially a sheet of tiny conductors put into the eye by surgeons.
[12:50.36]The patient will be fitted with a pair of dark glasses
[12:55.08]that have a small attached video camera and portable video processor.
[13:01.12]The battery-operated system will send video signals directly to their brain.
[13:08.19]However, the electronic retina doesn't restore full vision.
[13:13.57]It only allows users to sense light and dark contrasts
[13:18.65]and detect movement and important shapes.
[13:22.51]And the images they perceive are not in color.
[13:26.78]Moreover, this device can only be applied to remedy blindness caused by damaged retina.
[13:34.35]So eventually the manufacturer hopes to put the device in the brain's visual area.
