[12:18.00]Almost three quarters of the earth's surface is covered in water.
[12:23.58]And around 90% of all the living space on Earth

[12:30.52]These vast reserves cradled early life
[12:33.87]and continue to be home to a wealth of extraordinary creatures.
[12:39.35]At least 230,000 unique species have been documented,
[12:45.24]although as humans have only explored
[12:47.27]a small fraction of the depths,
[12:49.78]there may be as many as two million.
[12:53.60]As well as being home to marine creatures,
[12:56.70]the oceans offer a range of critical services,
[13:00.19]including acting as a source of food
[13:02.75]and regulating the atmosphere.
[13:05.54]In particular, the oceans are also vital as sponges
[13:09.63]for green house gases.
[13:11.99]Today, the oceans soak up
[13:14.46]around one third of all of human carbon emissions.
[13:19.10]But this comes at a terrible cost.
[13:21.95]The oceans are changing to contain more acid,
[13:25.76]threatening the tremendous diversity of creatures
[13:28.86]that call them home.
