In May 1960, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration（美国食品药品监督管理局） approved the world's first birth control pill（避孕药）. Today, 12 million American women take the Pill, making it the leading contraceptive（避孕用的） in the United States. In her 1975 hit single（热门单曲）, country star Loretta Lynn sings a victory anthem（胜利赞歌） for the Pill: You wined me and dine（款待） me When I was your girl Promised if I'd be your wife You'd show me the world But all I've seen of this old world Is a bed and a doctor bill（账单） I'm tearin' down your brooder house 'Cause now I've got the pill. In the post-World War II baby boom era（时代）, the impetus（动力; 势头; 促进; 声势） for promoting an oral contraceptive for women came not from drug companies or the government. It came from the vision（想象力） of two women: Margaret Sanger and Katharine McCormick. Sanger and McCormick felt the female contraceptive could emancipate（解放，解脱） women. The team they worked with to make that happen attached other far-reaching（意义深远的） utopian（空想的社会主义者，空想家; 乌托邦居民） dreams to the project.
