[11:54.36]Coral reefs are amongst the most productive areas of the ocean.
[11:59.66]Each coral contains small plants within its tissue
[12:03.64]that can capture the energy of the sun and convert it into food.
[12:09.13]The corals benefit from this,
[12:11.45]and this helps support a whole community of life in the ocean.
[12:17.01]Many people live close to coral reefs,
[12:20.24]and local communities rely on the reefs to survive,
[12:23.77]which are regarded as sources of tourism revenue.
[12:28.01]However, many reefs are under pressure
[12:31.11]from international fishing fleets
[12:33.41]and from the problems posed by climate change.
[12:37.34]A third of reef-building corals are in danger of extinction.
[12:41.71]And reefs all over the world are in serious decline.
[12:46.50]If they are going to see through
[12:48.14]this period of great change in the oceans,
[12:51.42]coral reefs need to be able to recover as quickly as possible.
[12:56.22]That means we need to reduce exploitation pressures
[13:00.04]and increase protection for reefs.
