[12:30.44]In recent years, distraction by a device integral to the vehicle
[12:35.35]has been reported
[12:36.82]in a large number of crashes in America.
[12:40.28]So, US transport safety officials have made a proposal
[12:44.77]to limit driver distraction from gadgets built into cars.
[12:49.54]They want distracting functions to be disabled when driving.
[12:54.84]The new rules would cover integrated electronic devices,
[12:58.88]including mobile phones.
[13:01.60]But electronic warning systems would be exempt from the rules.
[13:06.83]The first phase of the plans only applies to built-in devices.
[13:12.07]However, in later phases further steps will be taken
[13:16.54]to limit the use of devices or systems
[13:19.45]brought into the vehicle while driving.
[13:22.67]This could include navigation systems,
[13:25.27]mobile phones, electronic tablets and pads,
[13:28.99]and other mobile communications devices.
[13:33.05]Since consumers always want more tools and conveniences,
[13:37.38]these rules would help car makers develop electronic devices
[13:41.67]that provide features consumers want,
[13:44.52]without disrupting a driver's attention or sacrificing safety.
