① The installation formally known as the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which opened this week, sits on a hill overlooking downtown Montgomery, Alabama, once the capital of the pro-slavery Confederate states.
② It commemorates the more than 4,400 victims of racial-terror lynchings—that is, African-Americans murdered, often publicly, by whites hoping to entrench a racist social order and terrorise entire communities.
③ At the memorial's centre is a walkway surrounded by 800 hanging steel columns, each etched with the names of a county and of the people lynched there.
④ Duplicate columns lie like coffins around the memorial, waiting for counties to pick them up and carry them home to be prominently displayed.
