S: Tom, happy holidays.
T: Thanks, happy holidays.
S: Merry Christmas.
T: Happy Hanukkah.
S: Sure. Happy Kwanzaa. All the good stuff.
T: Happy holidays.
S: Are you going to be home with your lovely wife, Rita, for the holidays?
T: Yeah, we will. We’ll fight our traditional tinsel (金属箔) war that we always have.
S: What’s the tinsel war?
T: Well, here’s the thing. I grew up with a Christmas decoration scheme by way of Woolworths’, the five-and-dime. You know, more shiny objects on the tree the better.
My wife grew up in a household where the kids were not allowed to decorate the tree. Her mom did it while they were at school. They would come home and it would be all done. And she would say, “Well honey, you won’t do it good, so I have to do it.”
So Rita has this thing about decorating the tree. And my thing has always been tinsel — old-school tinsel.
S: Like the individual strand.
T: The icicle (冰柱) stuff. But remember when we were kids, before I needed glasses, it was made out of literally a toxic substance (有毒物质).
S: Sure. Sure
T: It should’ve had, “Do not use hands to decorate your tree with this”.
S: It was developed at Los Alamos.
T: Yes. It had a half-life and it was a carcinogen (致癌物). You could get diabetes (糖尿病) from it. It gives you zits (丘疹). It was really bad stuff.
S: And delicious.
T: And it tasted good. Tasted like Christmas you know. It really did.
S: Do you do strands or do you just chuck it.
T: Well, now you can only chuck it, cause it’s not the same carcinogen that it had been. It’s not the same controlled substance. It’s strands of Mylar that are susceptible (容易受到…影响) to static electricity (静电). And you can’t get it to drape over the branches the way it had. It just kinda looked like a series of rats’ nests that collect on it.

S: Do you put the lights on yourself?
T: Eh I didn’t this year.
S: Okay. Do you put them top to the bottom or bottom to the top?
T: Oh you gotta start from the top.
S: That’s what I say. My wife says go bottom to the top.
T: That’s insane! She’s nuts!
S: I think so too.
T: Now, you have multicolored (多色) lights or just white lights?
S: Multicolored.
T: Oh, interesting.
S: What? What are you talking about?
T: Well… Look… I like them to flash. You have the flashing lights (闪烁灯) at least?
S: That’s insane. Flashing lights? We’re not landing a plane. We’re trying to get Santa to stop by.
T: If you have multicolored lights, then you’re not really sure what color the decorations are. Cuz a blue one will be right next to a gold bulb, and you say, it's a gold bulb it’s a blue bulb… I don’t know what color bulb it is.
S: Are you saying you color-coordinate (色彩调配) your lights and your bulbs?
T: Absolutely sir.
S: They have medicine for that now!
T: If you don’t understand the beauty of a symmetrically (对称) designed and decorated Christmas tree, get off my show!
