Backward, turn backward, O Time, in your flight,
Make me a child again just for tonight!
Mother, come back from the echoless shore,
Take me again to your heart as of yore;
Kiss from my forehead the furrows of care,
Smooth the few silver threads out of my hair;
Over my slumbers your loving watch keep;—
Rock me to sleep, mother—rock me to sleep!

诗人及诗歌简介

Elizabeth Akers Allen(伊丽莎白·埃克斯·艾伦，1832-1911)，美国诗人、记者。曾分别以Florence Percy和Elizabeth Akers为笔名出版了自己的前两本诗集，后面出版的所有诗集均使用Elizabeth Akers Allen这个名字。

这首诗歌是诗人旅居欧洲时创作的，首次于1859年发表，也是她最广为人知的作品，尤以前两句最为家喻户晓：
“
Backward, turn backward, O Time, in your flight,
Make me a child again just for tonight!
”
整首诗歌韵脚整齐，音律优美，语言动人，情绪悲伤。满满的都是对母亲的爱意和对童年的思念。

但是，本版本的朗读中，遗失了第四诗节，特补充如下：
“
Over my heart, in the days that are flown,
No love like mother-love ever has shone;
No other worship abides and endures,—      
Faithful, unselfish, and patient like yours:
None like a mother can charm away pain
From the sick soul and the world-weary brain.
Slumber’s soft calms o’er my heavy lids creep;—      
Rock me to sleep, mother—rock me to sleep!

艾莉森·斯戴曼(Alison Steadman, 1946)，英国女演员。曾获得英国最重要的戏剧及音乐剧奖项——“劳伦斯·奥利弗奖(Laurence Olivier Awards)”。
曾参演1995版电视剧《傲慢与偏见》，科幻剧《黑色孤儿(Orphan Black)》，等等。
