[11:51.16]The last reading.
[11:53.84]Memory and Ageing
[11:56.39]Many people worry about their memory as they get older.
[12:00.61]But progressive memory loss isn't inevitable as the years pass.
[12:05.49]Changes do occur in how the brain works
[12:08.24]and how we remember things.
[12:10.29]And diseases contributing to a decline in mental powers
[12:13.97]do become more common.
[12:16.72]Nevertheless, the majority of people reach their 80s or 90s
[12:21.05]without significant problems.
[12:24.20]Although the way the brain stores memories is far from understood,
[12:28.79]there seem to be several types of memory,
[12:31.64]including very recent memory,
[12:33.89]short-term memory and long-term memory.
[12:37.75]The older you get, the less efficient the brain becomes
[12:40.95]at storing and recalling memories.
[12:44.12]Part of the reason for this is
[12:46.05]that communications between different areas of the brain are lost
[12:50.22]as the brain cells wither and die.
[12:53.80]Recent memory seems to be particularly affected
[12:57.26]since it may rely on different parts of the brain.
[13:01.19]But long term memories may be just as clear.
