Boys as a group are perhaps the least understood human beings among us. Les Choristes provides a glimpse into the casual cruelty inflicted by institutions, educators and parents, until a surrogate father figure appears, giving the boys hope, affection and the gift of music. Bruno Coulais' original soundtrack featured the pure sound of a boys choir, and it became an international hit! In Josh's arrangement, the sing-song melody is transferred to a mellow sounding trumpet and later, cello and flute.

Here, in the fleeting moments of youth, our teen protagonists begin their own life stories. The conclusion of this moving music is like a farewell whistle, as their boat disappears from the horizon. The ferry, with all of its bright visions of the future, sets sail over the sparkling waves, like a dream.

Few soundtracks possessed the power of Michael Nyman's passionate, minimalist score for The Piano. In fact, the music itself became part of the dialogue for the mute protagonist, speaking her passion and her sadness, perfectly depicting a turbulent sea and a restless heart. The surreal imagery of a woman clad all in black on a beach, the ever present piano, the call of the tide, surging with emotions, and the journey of a women's self-redemption made for an incredibly powerful, award-winning film. At the climax of the music, the cello sighs with relief, accompanied by the steady rhythm of the drums, vividly recounting the tension that underscores the woman's life in this unfamiliar land, and the twin passions of love and hate that has been bred from it.

An America Affair was an odd film, combining a Coming of Age/First Love story with a gritty political conspiracy thriller. Whatever. The music was gorgeous! The guitar and the piano intertwine over a faint melody, as the female voice sings with heart-felt simplicity about the sadness of a lost love. Originally written back in 1963, it became a huge hit for the country singer Skeeter Davis. Over the years, it has been covered - and made a hit once again - by hundreds of singers, including The Carpenters, Bobby Darin, Brenda Lee, Julie London, Loretta Lynn, Al Martino, Johnny Mathis, Cindy Lauper and Susan Boyle.

But it’s the story of a love just always out of reach the keeps us hoping for our star-crossed lovers to finally find each other that draws us in. The melody shifts between the guitar and the piano like the whispers of a reluctant lover. A violin is heard, in imitation of a Chinese erhu, accompanied by cascading piano arpeggios, creating an atmosphere of courtly charm. We are swept up in this beautiful and fascinating music as the ancient rituals unfolds before our eyes on the screen, witnessing the splendor, decadence and melancholy, of an imaginary version of Eastern civilization for the Western gaze, played out with a profound sorrow for the decline and fate of the last great unified dynasty in Chinese history.

Filmed in 1971, the Mexican film Yesnia tells the story of a young man and woman who have suffered through tribulations and class barriers. The film became a tremendous hit in China, especially among younger viewers, who identified with the film’s protagonists. Of course, it also helped having a terrific theme song! Together the piano, flute and cello engage in an intimate dialogue, like a dream filled with sweetness and longing, like a parting kiss. Listening to this romantic song, it's impossible not to close your eyes and imagine the gypsy girl on the screen, and relive the tenderness and love hidden in the depths of time.

Josh Nelson, born and raised in Southern California, maintains an active and creative schedule as a pianist, composer, teacher, and recording artist.

Josh has recorded for countless albums, films, and TV, but also makes time for his own projects: Anticipation (2004) and Let it Go (2007, Native Language Music) both garnered international critical acclaim. Josh’s fourth album, I Hear a Rhapsody (2009), featured his original compositions, standard interpretations, and reinventions of rock tunes. Discoveries (2011), introduced a pairing of classic science fiction ephemera with new compositions for a brass and wind ensemble (featuring a live ongoing video projection and art installation component as well, called The Discovery Project).
